Merry Christmas Eve!

24 12 2012

Two in the far white basin:

Mona and daughter Shane

Mona, left, and her daughter Shane (by Kreacher) are in Hollywood’s band.

Our snow has started to melt with warm temps (45!), but another storm is on the way. Here’s hoping it snags over Disappointment Valley.

Warm white winter

23 12 2012

Don’t you love a rich, warm, golden dun mustang girl surrounded by stunning silver snow?

Kootenai in the snow.

Gorgeous Kootenai.

Love the warmth of her coat against the white snow and cool blue shadows. And she must be fuzzy and comfy in that warm coat at 8 below!

Shadow on the snow

22 12 2012

Not that “Shadow,” but dark and sleek and nearly jet black:

Bounce, following Hollywood's and Comanche's bands.

Bounce!

He has been following Hollywood’s and Comanche’s bands for a little while now. His daughter Aurora, his spitting image, down to her right hind fetlock, is part of Hollywood’s band. While I visited the horses, I sat in the snow, and Bounce took up guardian position behind me. Aurora wandered close – but not too close – to her daddy.

The elder mister looks pretty good. I bet he could tell some stories of winters weathered in Spring Creek Basin.

So much for the end of the world, eh? What a glorious day was the winter solstice!

Commitment

21 12 2012

Some friends – two couples – recently celebrated anniversaries. Same day. Twenty-six years and 18 years.

Kootenai and Sundance

Couldn’t help but think of them when I caught this quick moment between Kootenai and Sundance.

Happy (belated) anniversary, friends!

-8 and be there

20 12 2012

Not quite as iconic as Galen Rowell’s oft-quoted “f8 and be there” – nor, I suspect, will it become as universal. But at minus 8 degrees this morning, I was there, in the basin, in paradise turned white.

Seven; hill to the back right is the eastern side of Flat Top.

Seven in winter’s wonderland.

Hollywood's band

Hollywood’s band walking away from the noise of a truck. What kind of crazy person would be out here on a minus-8-degree morning?

Oh, right. 🙂

Aurora

Aurora with her band. For extra credit, name the horse in the background attached to those gorgeous stripes! (Aurora’s daddy, Bounce, whom she resembles so strikingly, is following the bands.)

The temperature didn’t get above about 22 degrees today. Snow-lasting temps. I love it.

Daddy’s little girl

20 12 2012

From last week:

Daddy Ty with daughter Seneca

Daddies love their babies, too. Ty and Seneca (mama Chipeta is leading just to the left).

Oh! Snow!

19 12 2012

Joy. 🙂

La Sal Mountains

The storm that blew over Colorado last night and this morning did NOT miss Disappointment Valley this time. Nor at least part of Utah, based on the above pic of the La Sal Mountains, which actually are northwest of us in the Beehive State. Close enough!

No pony pix (yet). Although it was cold (mid-20s), the snow was wet, and it did create mud of the earth beneath the snow, so I didn’t drive into the basin. After the snowstorm: clear blue beautiful sky. That promises a colllldddd night – and a frozen-road morning on which to (hopefully) access winter mustang paradise!

Two with spots

19 12 2012

On a cold, windy day devoid of snow and sunshine, these two brightened my day:

121712maikusaka1

Maiku, right, is both S’aka’s older brother (same sire, Copper) and uncle (brother of S’aka’s mother, Reya, through their mother, Kiowa). They look like their sister/mother/grandmother. She left her stamp.

Mustangs at the edge of the world

18 12 2012

Seen any “Pirates” lately? Seems a good reference for this shot:

121712hollscoms

Or was it “end” of the world? Ah well. That’s a mix of Comanche’s and Hollywood’s bands on the “edge” of the second saddle of what I call Lizard Mesa. Young bachelors Hayden, Tenaz and Apollo “ran into them” at the double ponds and sent them running north. I thought maybe they’d end up at Sorrel Flats for a drink, but only the boys were there when I arrived. West of the east pocket, I finally spotted the bands on the yonder ridge, all in a line, silhouetted by the sun just before it dropped into a snow-cloud bank, which has been stalled at the west/southwest ridgeline (the top of the very far tree-covered hill you can see in the background of the above pic) for the last two or more days.

Notice, if you will, the complete and utter lack of snow on the ground.

Gentle admonition to folks within 200 miles who got a foot-plus of the white stuff: Don’t be greedy!

How does EVERYBODY get snow but Disappointment Valley!? Not a speck; not a drop. It’s not even damp.

Weatherman says another wave is coming … Cross yer fingers ‘n toes. We sure need the moisture.

Storm

17 12 2012

Ask and ye shall receive!

Here are a couple of pix of Storm from the day I visited his band.

Storm at ease while grazing.

He was not easily distracted from his grazing.

Storm with the La Sals in the background.

This handsome young mister – he’s only 4 – is ambitious with his two mares (and their foal/yearling). But he’s also one of the most laid-back guys in the basin.
