Handsome heads

18 01 2012

As wonderful a visit as I was having with Chrome’s band – in a much more accessible location than they’ve been recently – I spotted horses at a short distance that, without benefit of the binocs and with benefit of earlier sighting in about that area, I thought were Seven and Tenaz. I couldn’t see Bounce through the trees, but I couldn’t see anybody else, either. Hadn’t seen those boys close for a while, so I thought I’d visit and get some pix of them to share.

Then it turned out to be Grey’s band. Always photogenic and worth a visit! But the sun was sinking …

And! Over yonder, I spotted Sundance’s band … and Aspen’s (who also had been closer earlier) … and, is that Storm and Shadow? Thinking Bounce and co. may have followed Aspen’s, I hit the trail. And yep, found Seven and Tenaz, and Bounce, too.

This was basically my view of Seven, similar to the one I posted earlier, trotting back and forth, wanting terribly to get closer to Mona. My thinking was that he had the advantage over Aspen, but they apparently didn’t see it that way, and Aspen prevailed. (Seven is now with Duke and Kreacher – as of last week.)

This is Bounce and Storm. For all Storm’s youth (he was 3 the end of July), he is big and strong – and he knows it. This is significantly cropped. I love Storm’s eye, framed by a wisp of his forelock and the curve of Bounce’s neck.

Mostly, Bounce and Tenaz watched the proceedings with interest and only minor (none for Tenaz) participation. Bounce was aged at this roundup at about 15; in 2007, he was aged at 20 (I want to be aged that way!). Tenaz will be 2 this spring; mama is Piedra, and daddy is Hollywood (can you see his resemblance to Hollywood??). No longer with mama and daddy (he went with auntie Baylee last spring when Comanche stole them (and Iya, Cougar and Sage)), he and Baylee ended up with Storm for the rest of the year, and Sage, Iya and Cougar ended up with Poco and Roach – who pretty quickly kicked Sage out (and he ended up with some other young bachelors (including Ze) and sometimes with Duke or Bruiser).

Did you follow all of that? 🙂

Can you just imagine what elder is teaching younger?

Most recently, of course, we saw it last year with Duke and Twister and Cuatro and Sage and Ze and Milagro and Bruiser. …  Still, it amazes me.

Seven and Bounce, former heads of bands (and don’t underestimate their potential to regain their status) … Tenaz – the future.

Sweet sun dreamland

17 01 2012

My visit with Chrome’s band was a late-afternoon sweet hour in the sunshine.

And if some of us enjoyed the sunshine’s warmth with eyes closed, who could blame us?

Little mister Killian was lying down when I first walked out to them. Winona laid down beside him – that’s the top pic. Terra and Hayden were standing to the side, faces to the sun.

Terra’s eyes closed; Hayden’s at half-mast.

Chrome’s in dreamland; ‘Nona’s keeping a sleepy eye on me. This was before she laid down beside Killian.

Wake-up time. The other horses had moved off, grazing – except mama Roja, partially seen in the background. Killian shares this funny sort of stretch with big brother Ze, who had already left the family when Killian was born.

He looked at me for just a few moments, then trotted off to his compadres (not mama, interestingly).

Terrific Terra – don’t you love her face? Those amber eyes?

Classic Chrome!

Greetings

That Hayden, he knows how to put out the happy grin!

Handsome young mister! Such a welcoming little face.

Look how fabulously furry he is!

Loves stepdaddy, too. 🙂

Return

16 01 2012

Dear readers,

I know I have been seriously lacking in the blog department for a couple of weeks now. But the ponies are fabulous. We even got some snow today – first in a month?! Very un-Colorado-, un-January-like. Mother Nature, we’ll forgive you – if you keep it coming. Wet, gooshy, slushy, sloogy snow – just what the dry, exposed soil and veggies (as in vegetation) need.

Only one minor change to report: Seven is currently with Duke and Kreacher. That, of course, could change at whim. He was still with Bounce and Tenaz … then Aspen brought his remaining girl (Mona, and her daughter, Shane) into sight – and sound – and that unleashed the most activity I’ve seen in awhile. And though Seven obviously didn’t regain Mona and Shane, he has two new compadres. No pix, though; I was showing friends … sans camera. Just enjoyment. 🙂

Randomness (from when I DID have the camera):

Seven, trotting over to (try to) greet his lost lady-love, Mona. I say, how gorgeous is he!

Meanwhile, Bounce thought he might take advantage of Sundance’s flirtation with Shane to pretend a little stand for Kootenai and Mysterium. Tenaz, at right, shadowed Bounce like his little brown, well, shadow.

Speaking of shadows (har) …

… there she is – Shadow – trotting off toward Mona while Aspen and Seven have a disagreement in the background. And what interest a mare when there’s boy-play to engage in? Storm breaks off from his pursuit of Shadow to harass Seven and Aspen.

Later:

I’m not sure where she wanted to go, but he didn’t want her going there.

Have you kept track of the bands? Aspen’s, Sundance’s, Bounce-Tenaz-and-Seven and Storm and Shadow.

Ah ha!

Sorry, girl. Can’t help you! Silly filly.

I will try to post lots of photos over the next couple of days to make up for the “dry season” – sorry! Hopefully we’ll get more snow, and our upcoming dry season won’t loom so terrifyingly dry. Did you note the appalling lack of snow in these photos??

Spots in a row

Three spotted girls and one spotted boy – minus the other boys. From lower right: Reya, Puzzle, Chipeta and Maiku.

Low on this hill, the sunshine was awesome. On top of the hill, the wind was biting!

Fascination

9 01 2012

When I take people to the basin to see the horses, or when I tell them about visiting the basin and the horses, I always make sure to tell them the first rule of the basin: No agenda.

Part of the basin’s magic is that it will give you amazing gifts – if you’re open to receiving them. If you’re closed – if you go with an agenda, with things to do and things you *must* see and a time by which you *must* leave – the basin will close its magic to you.

I didn’t make this rule, but I learned it right away. I forget it from time to time … and then the basin graciously re-teaches me the lesson, and I gratefully accept.

Aspen

Mona

Shane

I spotted these ponies nearly as soon as I drove into the basin. I didn’t know I was looking for them, but I was. 🙂 Saw a few more from a distance, but although there’s not much snow, there’s enough that parts of the road are pretty muddy, especially past about 9:30 a.m. So I walked out to Aspen’s band and hung out with them for a bit, then climbed one of the twin buttes to look for whoever else might be in view to be seen. Found a great rock upon which to perch and enjoy some strawberries while I glassed the great yonder. Heard a squeal behind me. Thought it was Aspen again trying to love on Mona, but I got up and looked over the edge …

Remember last year, when I found Corona alone? For whatever reason (known only to her), she wandered away from her family and teased Storm (still with mama Alpha then) for about a week, maybe, before she went back to mama Raven and family.

The week before last, Corona’s wanderlust hit again, and she wandered off. Alone.

This last week, she’s back.

The squeal? Grey/Traveler courting Miss Shane. 🙂 Oh, that lover.

She’s not ready to leave mama yet, though.

Lesson: Be open to the gifts available. 🙂

Forget the birds and the bees. Humm and buzz. Ponies, though … fascination.

After their initial flirt, he grazed his way back up the hill. From the butte, I could see Gaia and Aurora at the top, Houdini on the other side. He disappeared over the top … then reappeared – barely – and stood there, seeming to nap. Shane, with the curiosity of the young and the can’t-help-herself of her filly nature, went up, up, up … And he waited for her to come to him. Are men so patient? Are women? 🙂 Is he awesome or what?

Oh, yes, he did eventually tire of waiting and turned to pursuit.

Besides horse beauty … what are you seeing?

Rather – NOT seeing?

Proof – there’s still some around.

Snow, aye?

Handsomest.

Prettiest. I had been sitting up on the saddle of the hill when beautiful girl came into view.

Aurora …

… and Gaia were lovely in the light.

Houdini was visible from twin butte but not from closer. I walked up over. I walked around. I didn’t see her again until I was leaving – hi, girl! – and off she went to join her compadres.

Grumpy Corona back with the family.

Aurora, fuzzy and furry.

Like daughter, like mama!

Baby needs her mama still.

He amazes me.

She awes me.

She delights me.

She fascinates me!

Aspen wasn’t at all worried about Shane, and he never made any move toward Grey at all … but he stayed quietly by Mona, who quietly grazed. How I wish I could interpret all the equine language that must have been flowing!

He’s harmless, eh? Mmhmm.

The sun was sinking, sliding, slipping and disappearing behind the hills, the one we were on, the one farthest west.

Light that made the north hills glow like autumn in January. (I don’t know why she always seems to look so grouchy!) Nice wee belly, eh?

And a last shot of the mister.

Best medicine for what ails ye – for whatever ails ye.

Best lessons are best learned over and over again. 🙂

Welcome sighting

8 01 2012

They can hide, but they can’t vanish!

Puzzle and mama Chipeta on a gorgeous January morning.

The blog has been quiet, yes. My resolutions this year didn’t include taking it easy. 🙂

The horses are awesome. The snow – or lack thereof – is worrisome.

Dancing, anyone?

More of Chrome’s

2 01 2012

Didn’t spend a lot of time with these ponies. Sun sinking fast. So great to see them – right where they knew they were. 🙂

Handsome Hayden.

They were on a hill across a very steep drainage from the end of the corral hill, so I took pix as I climbed up the hill across from them. As you can see, we have gorgeous blue skies in Colorado!

Little stud muffin Killian. How much he looks like his big brother, Ze.

Mama Roja, watching me intently.

A bit later, when I was on top with them and they were grazing, mama suddenly looked up and gave me a weird stare. I tried to figure out what was wrong … only to notice that she had suddenly realized that Terra, Winona and Hayden had grazed on, leaving her closest to me. Oops. 🙂 She walked away, eyeballing me over her shoulder. I just chuckled to myself. Sweet girl.

You can’t tell from these photos, but the hill was steep, and my side (across a shallow drainage) was still snow-covered. Their side was muddier than it looks here.

Terra. Isn’t she growing up to be a gorgeous girl? Daughter of Grey/Traveler and Houdini. She’ll be 3 in the spring.

We could say the same about our lovely Winona! Daughter of Mouse (likely) and Kestrel. She’ll be 2 in the spring.

I just posted this one, but it’s the best I have of Chrome from that day. He mostly wandered around on the far side of the other horses, not worried about a thing, let alone looking handsome for the camera. 🙂

These are the ones I’ve tweaked so far, but I’m going to be without Internet for a couple of days, so will leave you with these. Saw almost all the horses last week – still not those elusive pintos! – but not many pix. Very warm. Very melty. Very muddy. We need snow!!!
