Spa day

Mama Alegre and daughter Maia (now 1 year old!) a couple of days after Maia’s birthday. They were grazing near the roller-coaster ridge pond – likely where they got their matching spa treatments. Maia looks like big sister Aurora and their daddy Bounce, but where Aurora may stay black like daddy, Maia is going grey like mama – and big brother Whisper.

In other news, the La Sals, starting to look a little ragged in this photo, have a mantle of new white now after some rain in the low country and snow in the high country. It’s a start, and it’s a relief. It IS green. I don’t understand it, but I love it! The moisture will help tremendously.

Overlap

Chipeta, Seven, Puzzle, Tesora and Shadow north of Round Top.

Chipeta, right, watches while Seven grazes with his mares, Puzzle and Shadow, and his stepdaughter, Tesora. Chipeta is Puzzle’s mama; she’s with Ty and their daughter, Seneca, who were out of this shot to the right. Copper also was with them. On this particular evening, their “spaces” overlapped a bit.

Inclusive exclosure

Sean Kelly, wild horse coordinator for the Carson National Forest’s Jicarilla and Jarita Mesa wild horse territories, points out plant usage to New Mexico volunteer Tyler Sharpe while Farmington BLM rangeland management specialist Jeff Tafoya talks to volunteer and advocate Barb Kiiper with the Jicarilla Mustang Heritage Alliance at one of the exclosures in Spring Creek Basin during our tour this week. There are five of these in the basin, as well as some smaller “cages.” They fence off a small section of land so range folks can determine impacts of grazing – and not.

I need about 13 more hours in the day to get to more photos from these tour swaps – which were fantastic! We met lots of people and learned some of the challenges our respective herds face. The New Mexico herds – BLM and Forest Service – apparently are way over AML. They’re seeing effects on both the horses’ condition and condition of the ranges because of it. The Jicarilla and Carracas Mesa ranges are rugged, and that’s being gentle. They need to remove hundreds of horses, but BLM’s Canon City short-term holding facility can’t take them – no room at the inn. They are removing some horses periodically; the Jicarilla Mustang Heritage Alliance recently adopted four to train and adopt to permanent homes. The biggest question they all seem to face is this: They know a roundup and removal of many, many horses is needed, but what to do with all those horses?

There’s apparently quite a bit of controversy around the removal of horses there to get to a balanced herd population, and I’ll be the first to admit I don’t know or understand all the details. To start the learning process was one of the goals of this tour swap. And it was good to meet the knowledgeable, caring folks on the front lines and hear their concerns and challenges.

Shadows

30 04 2013

Aspen against the La Sal Mountains at the end of the day.

My absolute favorite line from Opus Moon’s “Wild Horse Anthology” is from “Illusion”: “No one knows … where they go … as they slip into the shadows of the earth.”

That’s like saying any one mustang is my favorite. 🙂

Aspen, walking into the twilight shadows at the end of the day under the La Sals, epitomizes that line for me.

This music … every line is a favorite. If you don’t have this CD, get it. Period.

Bold boy faces

Oh these boys!

Duke and Kreacher were right near the road during a recent visit, and they and I could see Hayden, Tenaz, Apollo and Killian out on the flats not far away. (Yep, the young boys are back together; Aspen was alone and way to the east.) I took some pix of Duke and Kreacher for documentary purposes – they’re looking very hale and hearty – but didn’t think I’d walk out to youngsters.

They had other ideas! They galloped over to greet Duke and Kreacher!

Hayden, the oldest of the young, stopped to chat with Duke and Kreacher. There was a great deal of squealing and striking and rearing and biting and head waving and pooping of and sniffing of poop (heh). The younger three youngsters walked on by, then stopped to hang out with me!

That Tenaz, 3, is the spitting image of his daddy Hollywood. I can so see him as a future band stallion. He has a wise look, doesn’t he? (That’s him at left.) Apollo is just 2 this year (sired by Kreacher), and Killian, looking small and young beside them, also is 2 (they will be, in May).

When Hayden and the elder boys had concluded their discussions, Hayden walked (he might have strutted) over to the boys and tried to get someone else to play with him. Mostly unsuccessfully.

Look out girls. These handsome misters are growing up!

Shadow and Tesora

Shadow and her baby girl, Tesora – treasure.

Is it just me, or does her star look like a horse head?

Although I surprised Seven’s band – THEY surprised ME – around a bend and over a slight rise, they didn’t move away (which also surprised me). Within a few seconds of this photo, Tesora turned around to nurse – and Shadow let her. If mamas aren’t comfortable, they walk away and won’t let their babies nurse until they are comfortable. I took a few photos and moved on, before they got uncomfortable.

Sweet baby girl. Isn’t she beautiful?
