Seven’s ladies seem to be feeding him well. Puzzle is behind him, and you can just see Shadow at bottom right.

Sunlit Shadow
7 03 2013This pic just makes me smile. I caught this one image before she went back to grazing. From can’t-get-close when she was with David, to able to get pretty close when she was with Storm, to an intermediate, able-to-get-a-good-look-at-the-belly distance (and always grateful for a long lens). It’s all good.

To the victor …
1 03 2013Look who lost his girls:
OK, technically, David isn’t in this pic, but it’s implied, right? Poor David is the los*er*, and the los*ees* now are with Seven!
Little Shadow girl is sporting a belly. She – 6 this year – really is smaller/shorter than 2.5-year-old Puzzle.
I saw this new band last week in a snow squall, but I didn’t go close enough to take pix (the Jeep was a long way away, and I didn’t know at the time that the blowing snow wouldn’t turn to sticking snow).
Puzzle looks a lot like her mama Chipeta.

‘Puzzle’ – solved
16 12 2012It happened awhile ago that David acquired Puzzle, but I hadn’t seen them close enough for pix until this week. I was visiting Ty’s merry little band – with Copper, who, earlier in the week, was with Corazon’s band – when I spied Puzzle away off yonder. I bid grateful fare-thee-well to Ty, Chipeta and Seneca and beat feet for a visit with David.
A slow and cautious approach enabled some photos before Ty’s group followed me down the hill and sent the wary band in search of quieter environs.
Puzzle – the pretty pinto pony – is the big sister of Asher and Seneca (same dam: Chipeta; different sire: Copper). David, left, has had Shadow since she was a long yearling. They’ve had two colts: Wind and Coal. Both were adopted last year.
Puzzle was 2 on Sept. 1. Shadow was born in 2007 and orphaned that winter when her dam, Ceal, died. She returnd to the company of Bruiser’s band until the late summer / early fall of 2008, when the “southside boys” bachelor band stole the band; that’s when David stole Shadow and started his own band. He has had her almost continuously since then (Storm stole her after the roundup; David stole her back; Storm stole her back; David stole her back – and kept her).

David & his Shadow
29 09 2012They came to visit the baby, but the visit didn’t last long! Or maybe it was just a case of “oops, is this meadow already taken?”
Baby Seneca had just awakened from her nap and was nursing. Daddy Ty and uncle Copper were still napping … and then there was a bit of a commotion – and up popped a familiar blaze face! Followed by his little black Shadow.
Ty stayed with Chipeta and Seneca, and David took his Shadow away from Copper. Shiny, healthy ponies!
Not long, but their visit was fairly calm.

Surprises
26 05 2012Had a surprise viewing of David and Shadow and the pintos! I’m still torn on Shadow’s pregnancy (or not) status, and my view of her was obscured by greasewood or distance.
David
Shadow. If she’s not pregnant, she’s sure healthy – and she is. Look how shiny and great she looks!
Baby S’aka taking a nap under the watchful eye of Corazon. The dynamic may have changed slightly with the pinto band. Corazon seems very possessive of Reya, with Ty giving them some space. Copper is still low man, and I couldn’t see him well enough because of the greasewood, so it was hard to see the status of his injured knee. He was moving pretty well, though.
Ty, also looking very healthy.
Puzzle and mama Chipeta. Several of the horses were coated in mud, but Puzzle was bright-white and clean! There are a surprising number of places in the arroyo nearby that have water. Muddy, salt-crusted water, but more than none.
Maiku with big sister Reya and little brother S’aka.
Puzzle and Chipeta and Maiku and Copper. Copper is Maiku’s and Puzzle’s daddy.
Puzzle, Chipeta and Copper
Reya and her baby boy – he’s been playing in the mud!

Do be due
13 04 2012Miss Shadow has been one of the first foalers of the year. She was due today, in fact!
When she first realized I was there.
Curious girl.
I don’t think the girl is having a baby today. She’s thick enough through the belly that I think she *is* pregnant. But if so, she’ll be later this year.
Handsome Mr. David. He lost her during the roundup. Storm got her. David got her back. Storm got her back. David has her back. (Storm may have Mona.)
David and Shadow
Watchful David.
Two of a kind.

Return
16 01 2012Dear readers,
I know I have been seriously lacking in the blog department for a couple of weeks now. But the ponies are fabulous. We even got some snow today – first in a month?! Very un-Colorado-, un-January-like. Mother Nature, we’ll forgive you – if you keep it coming. Wet, gooshy, slushy, sloogy snow – just what the dry, exposed soil and veggies (as in vegetation) need.
Only one minor change to report: Seven is currently with Duke and Kreacher. That, of course, could change at whim. He was still with Bounce and Tenaz … then Aspen brought his remaining girl (Mona, and her daughter, Shane) into sight – and sound – and that unleashed the most activity I’ve seen in awhile. And though Seven obviously didn’t regain Mona and Shane, he has two new compadres. No pix, though; I was showing friends … sans camera. Just enjoyment. 🙂
Randomness (from when I DID have the camera):
Seven, trotting over to (try to) greet his lost lady-love, Mona. I say, how gorgeous is he!
Meanwhile, Bounce thought he might take advantage of Sundance’s flirtation with Shane to pretend a little stand for Kootenai and Mysterium. Tenaz, at right, shadowed Bounce like his little brown, well, shadow.
Speaking of shadows (har) …
… there she is – Shadow – trotting off toward Mona while Aspen and Seven have a disagreement in the background. And what interest a mare when there’s boy-play to engage in? Storm breaks off from his pursuit of Shadow to harass Seven and Aspen.
Later:
I’m not sure where she wanted to go, but he didn’t want her going there.
Have you kept track of the bands? Aspen’s, Sundance’s, Bounce-Tenaz-and-Seven and Storm and Shadow.
Ah ha!
Sorry, girl. Can’t help you! Silly filly.
I will try to post lots of photos over the next couple of days to make up for the “dry season” – sorry! Hopefully we’ll get more snow, and our upcoming dry season won’t loom so terrifyingly dry. Did you note the appalling lack of snow in these photos??

Storm Shadow
11 12 2011On a bright and shining day. 🙂
Shadow and Storm. They were waiting for Aspen’s band, who were apparently waiting for Sundance’s band to drink down in the arroyo. Shadow would get impatient and wander away. Storm would turn his head to look at her, then go back to watching the other horses. Patience of a … wild horse, that one. 😉 No sign of David, though Duke and Kreacher were not too far to the west, and Bounce, Tenaz and Seven were together far to the northeast. (They were fairly close together last week, all together, a bit east of this location.)
She’ll be 5 in the spring. He’ll be 4 the end of July.
Shadow against the La Sals (which are in Utah, this east, Colorado side of Moab).
He stood on that ridge for a long time, watching and waiting, His ridge falls away to a little bench above the actual arroyo, and I’m on the other side of it. We’re about in the heart of the basin right here.
I love how furry and handsome and shiny they are!

Calendar – last day
9 12 2011Reminder: Today is the deadline to vote for calendar pix!
Some images are winners by miles; some months are tight.
I may have to exercise some executive decision-making …
If you’ve procrastinated, you have until 8 p.m. mountain time. Then I’ll draw a name to win a calendar, and I’ll announce the winner and winning photos tomorrow (Dec. 10).
Thank you all so very much for your votes and support of our Spring Creek Basin mustangs!
Shadow, yesterday.
