Random beauty

16 11 2011

Some random photos that I just didn’t get posted during the last week from my last visit …

Biggest change – Bounce and Tenaz have picked up Seven and Storm. Happy to see those boys together.

Grey/Traveler, looking magnificent as always.

Baby Mysterium. Love this sweet dancer girl.

Mysterium and mama Kootenai

Sundance and the La Sal Mountains (Utah).

That was looking northwest; this is looking east-ever-so-barely-southeast toward McKenna Peak and the unnamed promontory (Colorado).

Burly-man Comanche

Handsome Hollywood (yes, their bands are still family)

Tenaz. Hollywood’s son, fairly close here … looking at Storm …

Seven and Bounce

Leaving you with supreme cuteness – Mysterium.

Littlest

22 10 2011

These are from the week before last, but I never posted them because I couldn’t come up with a cohesive “story.”

Maybe they don’t need a story but just stand on their own.

Apollo napping with Mysterium.

Apollo

Mysterium … that’s Sundance’s leg. He was standing near her (Kootenai is to the left), then …

… he laid down, too, for a little pony-nap! See Mysterium behind him? He was dreaming hard, that boy. His ears twitching back and forth – pricked to pinned and back – his cheek rippling as his jaw clenched and unclenched. Several times, I thought he was going to roll right on down on his side, but he never quite did.

Love this …

Later in the day, I found them right by the road, and I couldn’t resist (how can I ever?).

Kootenai and Mysterium with Sundance.

Shedding her baby coat …

Mysterium and mama

On her way …

When I first saw Kootenai do this, I thought I was “catching a moment” … but she does it every time Mysterium nurses. She “hugs” her like this for long moments. Beautiful mama.

Mysterium and stepdaddy Sundance. (Daddy Kreacher and Duke are still together this week.)

Gorgeous.

Into the sunset.

Miscellaneous

30 09 2011

These are just pix that jumped out at me when I was going through images. The pix of Sundance and Apollo were cropped from their original horizontal images.

Sundance, looking all kinda handsome.

Mysterium using mama Kootenai’s tail as a fly whisk.

Apollo – wow, huh? Look out, mares!

Duke – look how shiny he is! And those dapples coming out! Interestingly, he and Kreacher were fairly close … (interesting because Duke picked up Raven a couple of years ago right after she had Corona … he kept them until that fall, when Kreacher stole them back, injuring Duke in the process … now they’re both single guys, and someone else – Sundance – has Raven and Kootenai and the foals).

Kreacher wasn’t looking too worse for wear, though he does have quite a few new scars on his left side, from his cheek to his barrel. So he didn’t go lightly into his bachelorhood. He’s on a hill across a drainage from the hill I’m on, Duke behind me. I couldn’t see Duke anymore from where I stood here, but Kreach could see him (because we could see Kreach from where Duke was).

I think I’ve updated on all the new bands/bachelors – maybe more pix of Seven’s band. No pic of Corazon; he was way in, and I didn’t hike out to him. And like I said, I haven’t yet found three horses: David, Poco and Roach. I’m working on updating the “Find a wild horse” page; need to update the photos as well.

Good reports on all the adopted horses I’ve heard about. And really good news about adoptions/sales from Canon City. Of the four from the adoption (Pinon, Baylee, Iya and Liberty), I think all are or will be adopted but Pinon, and he’s not forgotten. I think things are being finalized for all the others that originally went.

The band formerly known as Kreacher’s

28 09 2011

The day before the roundup actually got under way, we were setting up at the new trapsite, and I think we were all amazed when Kreacher’s band went racing across the hill to the west – with Sundance immediately behind them, Chrome behind him and Kreacher trailing. Sundance had been a mostly lone bachelor since losing Mahogany and Eliana to Aspen this spring right after Eli was born. I had to go for my binoculars to confirm what my eyes were telling me. Then they were over the hill, out of sight, and there was Chrome’s band.

The lay of the land made the west side of Filly Peak a good place for a trapsite, but when I found out the helicopter would be bringing horses in around the “back side,” I was concerned. The “flats” and the area between Filly Peak and corral hill are some of the most broken and cut by arroyos in the whole basin, though it’s very deceptive to look at. So I set off with two BLM guys – two of the best men I’ve ever met – and we hiked around to check the horses’ trails and tracks they’d likely follow to get from yonder to the trap. On our way back, here came Jif, Hayden, Two Boots, Rio and Boreas, galloping around toward us. They passed us, but stopped, then, while we waited to see what they’d do – where they’d go – they turned around and galloped back around (toward the trap and where they’d come from – where they’d “lost” Chrome), kicking up their heels as they went.

Though I’ve found it difficult to hike that part of the basin, by the way the helicopter brought them around, the horses clearly had no trouble negotiating the terrain. I want to say again how impressed I was with the helicopter pilot.

Back to “Kreacher’s band,” they were not targeted during the roundup (thank you again to the pilot), and so I never saw them during those days … or the day after when I went back into the basin to look for horses. Chrome’s did, of course, come in. Jif deserves her own post at some point … Two Boots was adopted by a very nice lady; Boreas went to a nice couple very close to Disappointment Valley; Rio is getting ace marks from his adopters – eating from her hand and being led by a break-away string around his neck.

All that leads up to me being anxious – let alone eager – to find this particular band.

Raven, Apollo, Mysterium and Kootenai.

Baby girl with mama. Not too many bugs but pretty warm. (We were wearing jackets during the roundup!)

Apollo with baby sister Mysterium.

Playing – Sundance in the background.

And what about Kreacher? Well, he’s alone right now. He was very close to Duke on Tuesday, but they may or may not hook up. I wouldn’t count either mister out.

Boy band

13 07 2011

Is there anything as fun as watching bachelors? 🙂

Most of our older bachelors have found families, and we have a new generation of bachelors. They’ve been together, they’ve paired up, they’ve split, they’ve found older boys, they’ve found boys slightly less old. During last week’s visit, all the young boys were with Aspen and Sundance (who have their own history), and they were all hanging out close to Luna’s band, which has Lt. Steeldust (formerly the band stallion) and satellite Mouse (and those two have gone back and forth in recent weeks). This visit, Mouse was entertaining the boys while Steeldust and Butch stayed close to the girls (Luna and Alpha).

Bachelor boy butts. 🙂 Might as well start with a chuckle, eh? In back is Milagro, then left to right: Sundance, Cuatro, Ze, Sage and Aspen.

Luna’s band: Steeldust at back left, Butch, Gideon barely visible, Alpha, Luna and napping Varoujan. He kept lying down … and the girls would graze away, and he’d get up and follow … and lie back down … and they’d graze away …

The little with mama Luna and “auntie” Alpha.

Sage, Cuatro and Mouse

Butch finally decided to leave the girls (and Steeldust) and come check out the competition, all of whom were politely respectful. That’s Sage he’s stretching toward, Ze to Sage’s left, Mouse in back and Aspen at right. Who spots napping Varoujan?

Varo napping while Cuatro grazes.

Ze walking past napping Varo. He was followed by Aspen – most of the boys are to the left, and Varo’s band is to the right. None of the stallions made so much as a threatening flick of the ear toward the little boy.

Sundance mostly ignored the goings-on. Milagro tended to stick back with him. He’s quite a bit smaller than the other colts, as you can see in the first pic of their butts toward me. He, Sage, Ze and Cuatro are all 2 years old. Sundance is probably about 6; Aspen and Mouse are probably about 6-8ish.

Mouse, right, and Cuatro.

Mouse, front, and Sage.

Ze – that’s Cuatro, grazing, at right.

Ze and Cuatro again – comfortable with each other. They’ve been together and apart … the pal-pairs are Sage and Ze and Cuatro and Milagro.

Just makes me smile. 🙂 From left: Cuatro, Aspen, Sage and Mouse.

And wider, to show some of the beautiful background – looking eastish.

Varoujan napping, framed by grazing daddy Butch.

Can you even stand how cute he is?! Just a tired little boy who’s been playing in the mud and is now all tuckered out. 🙂

Taking steps to convince mama it’s lunch time. How DO little boys get so covered in mud?! 🙂

I caught up on some pix of ponies today – more coming.

For Billie

Your boy Aspen!

He and Sundance have apparently forgiven and forgotten, and they were together near an almost-dry pond, along with four other bands in the near to far distance. When we walked back to the Jeep, Aspen put on a little show with SunD looking at him as if wondering what he was getting so revved up about!

When Sundance didn’t follow him, he came back, and he and Sundance made a great show of fussing over a stud pile … and he connected a pretty well-aimed kick at poor SunD’s butt.

Contact

24 05 2011

A couple of “miscellaneous” and several from an evening.

Piedra and Briosa looking south … I think that vibrant green cottonwood makes the whole scene. 🙂

Ties of family are strong, blood or no. Liberty and her mother, Molly, spent time with Bounce’s band shortly before Molly died in the fall of 2009. Afterward, Liberty went back to the band … then ended up with Cinch in the fall of 2010. Gaia ended up with them over the winter (January 2011?). Gaia is 3 (Alegre’s daughter, Bounce’s stepdaughter), Liberty is 2 (Seven x Molly). It’s not a huge surprise these girls ended up back together. 🙂

Sundance and Hollywood in sync.

I ended up right on the road in a great position to watch some awesome dynamics playing out. From a distance, I had seen Sundance (recently separated from Mahogany, Eliana and Aspen) with Sage and Ze, two young (2 years old) bachelors. Hollywood’s were close – as were Hook’s band.

Hook

Hollywood

Double trouble on the bubble – Sage and Ze wisely kept their distance, but all the boys – and girls – were well aware of them.

Sisters Hannah (bay) and Ember

Part of the magnificent background of Spring Creek Basin – Knife Edge, McKenna Peak and the unnamed promontory …

Hook’s band – Brumley Point in the background …

Fierro, Hannah and Sable. Hollywood actually stole Hannah briefly when she was a yearling (by briefly, I mean around an hour or so). That was shortly before she followed sister Ember and half-brother Pinon to Hook’s band … followed shortly thereafter by Sable.

Hollywood about to greet Pinon …

Hollywood left Piedra and Briosa for quite a long while during this melee … He later chased Sundance far to the east, and Hook’s and Sage and Ze eventually followed, and Holls eventually went back to his girls.

What a day!

Eliana and family

17 05 2011

Eliana is the daughter of Mahogany and Sundance. When the fracturing of Steeldust’s band started in earnest last spring, Mahogany ended up with Sundance – and bachelor Aspen. Just a day or two after Eliana was born – and the day after I first saw her – Aspen finally succeeded in stealing her from Sundance. Among the meanings of her name is “daughter of the sun” – and so she is, not to be forgotten, though Aspen now has her and Mahogany.

Mahogany lost her foal last year before I ever saw it. This adorable  little red girl is healthy and strong and full of spunk!

Mama Mahogany and her beautiful, sunny girl.

I love how the babies’ ears are curled after they’re born.

Though I don’t like to think about how any of the babies may have died, I am glad Mahogany got a break last year. She’s an older mare, though I don’t know how old, and she looks much better with Eliana than she did last year.

Aspen, Sundance, Mahogany and Eliana.

Handsome daddy Sundance – this was the next day, when he was alone and nursing some wounds.

Check out that wavy mane … who else has a wavy mane like that? Maybe he has passed it to his daughter – daughter of the Sun.

Grand ol’ beautiful lady is also an excellent mama.

Baby girl has a wide blaze like mama’s, but Eliana’s tapers over to the right side. Since I’ve known Mahogany, she has had two dark bays like herself (Pinon may be even darker) and a black foal. Piedra – grey – *may* be her daughter … and David may be her son (scroll down a couple of posts to compare). Eliana is the first sorrel she has had in that time.

I love, too, how the mamas constantly touch and sniff their newborns. Constant contact builds strong bonds.

I adore this moment – for itself and because I have a nearly identical photo from when Pinon (now 3) was a baby – with the exact same expression on his face as mama Mahogany reassures herself that her baby is just fine. 🙂

Beauty in nature

1 04 2011

How many ways can I say it?

Let the magic speak for itself!

Mahogany’s, left, and Hook’s. This is taken from almost as far east as you can get in the basin – below the eastern ridges – looking west-northwest. They had been napping earlier … and later ended up separated again.

Pretty darn beautiful, eh?
