Copper

9 08 2012

Copper is looking hale and hearty. Moving well after his knee injury earlier this year.

Spotlight on bay boy!

I do love those handsome bays!

He’s still hanging with the pintos.

Almost-2-year-old Puzzle with daddy Copper in the background.

Another one from the visit with the pinto ponies:

Reya against a shadowed background. Rain was coming, giving great light and shadows across the basin.

Mama Reya with baby S’aka.

Uncle Maiku was missing from the group; hopefully he’s taken up with the other young bachelor boys, Hayden, Tenaz and Apollo. They were among the few horses my family and I didn’t see during our visit. Those boys have been doing some wandering across the basin!

Dancer

He dances on air …

He’s not very big, but isn’t he gorgeous?

Big sister, little brother

7 08 2012

Same sire: Copper.

Big sister Puzzle takes good care of little brother S’aka, who clearly adores her. (Reya was immediately to the right.)

Puzzle’s mama is Chipeta, who is probably about 7 years old and due to foal around Sept. 1; S’aka’s mama is Reya, who is 5 years old.

Diggin’ the spots

Today was a good day to check the status of the Round Top pond. On the way, I stopped for a visit with the pinto ponies.

Copper walks past the Round Top pond.

Then there was some of this:

Mama Reya and baby S’aka.

And a bit of this:

Copper, with Brumley Point in the background.

And a teeny bit of this:

Puzzle with mama Chipeta and stepdaddy Ty.

And we got a nice downpour later. What a wonderful day!

Green and rose

5 08 2012

Have been busy with family – hi, Mom and Dad, Tom and Kayla! – and haven’t had much time to post. We did get into the basin this weekend to see the horses, and saw almost all of them. Kreacher has lost Roja and Killian to … drum roll, please … Storm! They’re back in the east pocket. Bounce was close-ish. Kreacher is with Seven. All else seems normal.

The trapsite pond does have water, and the northwest and roadside ponds are dug out and just waiting for a drencher! The hills are so green right now. The range looks fantastic, and the horses look fabulous!

The horses were mostly at a distance, so I’m going back a couple of weeks for this one of sweet Mariah. She looks so rosy with her red coat going grey.

What a stunner. 🙂

Holls’ girls

1 08 2012

A week ago, Hollywood’s, Comanche’s and Kreacher’s bands were on what I call the roller-coaster ridge. Bounce was out below the east end of the ridge. Some of those ponies do like to stick together.

From left: Mona, Shane, Temple and Piedra. Mamas and daughters. Hollywood’s girls.

Comanche’s girls were behind them, and Kreacher’s were heading down toward the pond (dug out in 2010 and one of the three that didn’t go dry this year).

Some good lookin’ girls Mr. Hollywood has. 🙂

Shane, running to catch up with her band a couple of weeks ago.

Pretty mustang girl. 🙂

Horses of different colors

30 07 2012

Mama Kestrel and her girls Madison, 2 1/2 months old, and Juniper, yearling. Her first daughter, Winona, is buckskin. Juni is going grey like her daddy, Comanche, and baby Madi is bay like … ? Her daddy also is Comanche; his background unknown.

Great news on the pond front: The trapsite pond has about 3 feet of water as of today! Thanks to C (and intern from South Carolina D) for the great news! The Forest Service dozer operator still was working on it some but had to abandon. J will finesse the spillways of the northwest and roadside ponds and then be done with those two. They look great – nice and deep. We had amazing rains yesterday and Saturday – particularly Saturday. Disappointment Creek started flowing again (not that it helps the horses because it doesn’t flow through the herd area, but it’s a marker for the overall valley).

The hills are green – for the first time this year really. So amazing to see what some good rain can do for this high desert environment!

This was taken at the northwest pond late last week looking northish. Sundance’s band is in the scene; can you spot them? Trick question. 🙂 They’re really not visible in this image, especially at this size. But they are there. See the promontory at the top of the image? Below that, on the open hill, the trees? The horses are near/under the leftmost of those trees. I kept looking up there, thinking I saw something … and telling myself “no way.” But I *have* seen horses up there before … and sure enough, when I finally went for the binocs, Sundance’s band. Those mountain goat-ponies. 🙂

But really, look at the foreground: grass! This area was seriously *burnt* as recently as a week or two ago (I hate it when people say/write “burnt” when they mean burned, but this area was seriously crispy, and there’s really just not another word for it).

This is looking northwestish from the middle-ish area of the basin. Duke is there.

Rain. Green. Love.

Terra and the belly saga

28 07 2012

Busy, busy and rain, rain!

THREE ponds have been dug out, including the northwest pond previously featured (and it turns out that the panorama I posted earlier was NOT the finished product). There’s nothing too sexy about pix of dry, dug-out ponds, but I will tell you that the northwest, roadside and trapsite ponds all are dug out deeper now … just in time for the marvelous, glorious rain that (keeps coming today and) leaves me dancing for joy!

I am super grateful – again – to C and J from the Forest Service (Dolores and Durango offices) for doing such a fantastic job with those ponds!

And now, on to Terra. A friend and I were in the basin this last week and got a nice, close-up look at Chrome’s band, which were right by the road and Filly Peak as we left at sunset.

I know what you’re all going to say.

Go ahead and say it. 🙂 It’s possible that it could be probable.

Winona-girl and Chrome

Always handsome!
