After-snow glow

How is it that he always glows? The storm was just passing, and the sunshine was spreading through the clouds and snow. And Hayden was looking handsome … as he does. 🙂

Tiny shelter

It’s impossible to see in this pic, but it was snowing. Really! Terra was trying to keep her butt to the wind – and the snow – using that poor little tree as a buffer. It didn’t work very well … especially when Piedra booted her from her “shelter” just a few seconds later. 🙂

Caught’cha nappin’

Yesterday morning, this scene – other than black beauty girl Shadow – was all white.

No matter that the air temperature didn’t hit the magic number of 32. That ol’ Colorado-high sunshine can melt the frostiest snow. Especially when it’s not much more than an inch-or-so dusting.

We *heart* Sundance

Is it just me, or does that bit of a mud smudge on Sundance’s belly look like a little heart?

We were surrounded by mustangs here; there are some in the background, not really visible from this angle, and there was a band behind me. He’s looking in their direction, though he couldn’t see them over the hill.

He was completely calm … grazing along, eating some snow. Plenty to go around. 🙂 This is in the far eastern part of Spring Creek Basin; it’s a bit higher, and there’s more lingering snow.

Spotty snow and special spots

I love finding some of our pinto girls in the snow! Spirit and Puzzle have been wandering unseen for a little while, so I was ecstatic to find them, especially with McKenna Peak right behind them!

The still of winter

During these days of the freeze-thaw-mud cycle, trips to the basin are morning trips now. If you don’t get out early, you won’t get in the basin at all. Or, as someone found out almost the hard way the afternoon of the day I took the above pic of Mariah, you won’t get very far in, and you’ll be lucky to leave only ruts and not get stuck in the mud.

Blue eyes under the blue sky

If anything goes better with a blue sky than a handsome blue-eyed mustang, I don’t know what it is. 🙂

He’s bold, he’s red

He’s Master Hayden.

FYI: Local (Cortez) newspaper The Journal published an article about the HMAP-revision scoping period in its Thursday online edition.

And in case you missed it, here’s the link to my previous blog post about “Revising our HMAP.”

Secret snow

In the secret, almost hidden, winter-white, winter-quiet forest, Piedra wonders how the heck I found her.

It’s a secret, sweet girl. It’s totally top secret. … And P.S., you all showed yourselves on the other side of the ridge just as I happened to look. 🙂

A most puzzly puzzle

Do you see what I see?

There ARE three mustangs in this pic, and don’t feel bad if you can’t spot them. I passed them once and saw them only after I spotted the horses on the ridge where I am taking this photo, and turned around to get back to where I could most easily hike up to them.

Round Top is in the distance, and the treed ridges in the farthest background are beyond Spring Creek Basin.

Hint: There’s one grey and two dark horses, just this side of where you can tell the road is going to cross that arroyo in the sort of middle distance.
