It wasn’t the gnats that had Tesora in a seeming funk – too cold and windy. Maybe she was self-conscious about her beard (probably not). 🙂 She, like all the horses, are shedding quickly.
Although we didn’t get as much rain as anticipated, we did get temps – daytime temps – in the 30s (and yes, some big, heavy flakes of snow that added to our ground moisture). But now Colorado weather predictors are marching us toward 80-degree temps.
So April did, indeed, end with lovely showers; now we hope May brings flowers – and lots of grass!

Here’s a chuckle for your morning commute.
The appeal of the soft-silt dry bed of a pond (still carrying some water in the deepest part) was too alluring for Kwana to worry about a crazy ol’ human, so he laid down and rolled – right in front of me! Then he performed a quick equine yoga move before he got back to his feet to continue playing with his pals.

In serious good news (and our mustangs need every bit they can get these days), the second “Mustang Tales” column by Kat Wilder went up on the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign website yesterday. This one is called “Happy Trails,” and its chief message is an incredible and heartfelt tribute to Dr. Jay Kirkpatrick.

Gorgeous girls Winona and Mariah do the march on a windy day in Spring Creek Basin.

Happy birthday to my little brother, Jeff!
We were partners in adventures as kids – often, those adventures included our horses – and although we now live far away from each other, those memories keep me company through the stretches between phone calls and visits.
Happy birthday, Jeffrey! I hope you have a marvelous May Day birthday!

Aurora stands against rain-curtained far hills. We have gotten some rain … though not to the extent forecast. It’s still in our forecast, and we’re still hopeful, even as all the region finally is showing signs of spring green. It’s a beautiful time of year, after all!
Another sign of spring: See how sleek and shiny she is!

Our mares are lucky ladies, aren’t they? 🙂

Comanche is handsome in any light, of course, but this light is a highlight in oh so many ways.

This brings to mind the insane people who would cause a horse pain in order to achieve maximum action – all in pursuit of a bit of ribbon. Here, Corazon shows off his high-steppin’ ability – naturally. The crazy thing is that Saddlebreds and Tennessee Walking Horses have that natural ability. It’s only humans who would overly and unnaturally exaggerate it.

Here’s another hunky young(ish) stallion in Spring Creek Basin: Sundance.
The weather has been windy, and the wind makes it dry – drier, even, than normal – which is dry (!). Thankfully, we have rain in the forecast, and if the wind pushes the rain to us, well, we’ll take it!
