Another three

2 03 2013

Grey, Houdini and Mariah.

These three are part of Grey/Traveler’s band, which also includes Alegre and Maia.

End-of-the-day gorgeousity. Is there a more beautiful place in the world? You can’t convince me!

Oh! Snow!

19 12 2012

Joy. 🙂

La Sal Mountains

The storm that blew over Colorado last night and this morning did NOT miss Disappointment Valley this time. Nor at least part of Utah, based on the above pic of the La Sal Mountains, which actually are northwest of us in the Beehive State. Close enough!

No pony pix (yet). Although it was cold (mid-20s), the snow was wet, and it did create mud of the earth beneath the snow, so I didn’t drive into the basin. After the snowstorm: clear blue beautiful sky. That promises a colllldddd night – and a frozen-road morning on which to (hopefully) access winter mustang paradise!

Of horses and mountains

14 12 2012

Seneca and Chipeta, Filly Peak and the La Sal Mountains in the background.

You can’t imagine this land without them, can you?

That’s Asher’s mama, Chipeta, and his little sister, Seneca. In the background: Filly Peak (within Spring Creek Basin, Colorado) and the La Sal Mountains (Utah). The snow on the mountains is from the last snowfall that left just an inch in Disappointment Valley. More coming – today?! Our fingers and hooves are crossed!

In front of our eyes

29 04 2012

Every little wild girl should have a little mountains in her background. 🙂

Gilded

10 04 2012

Chrome in the golden light of early morning.

Hayden and Terra – half-siblings. Daddy: Grey/Traveler.

Chrome was highlighted so gorgeously against the far hills, just-gilded with first light.

Alert Winona, watching something in the distance that I couldn’t see.

Gorgeous stallion, perfect backdrop … and he paused in his grazing only to amble to the next tasty tidbit.

Still gorgeous. Still perfect.  🙂

Miss Shane

24 03 2012

Has a new family.

The last time I saw her, she was with mama Mona and stepdaddy Aspen. Seven was nearby, as were Roja and Killian, but from the distance, I couldn’t quite tell whether he had them or was just hanging out close-by in hopes of *getting* them. Bounce was fending off lone Storm (which made me think perhaps David has reclaimed Shadow), and Duke, Kreacher and Tenaz were nearby.

Now, flirty girl is with … guess who!?

Do you recognize the pretty grey girl in the foreground?

The La Sals have some nice snow after the last storm, but they seem to be losing it day by day with this warm, dry, windy weather (ah, spring!).

Calling her “flirty” is anthropomorphism, of course, but before Hollywood, I’ve seen her “flirting” with Grey/Traveler and Sundance – always returning to mama, though. She turned 1 last Sept. 1.

She looks quite a lot like Aspen, not only because of her color but because of her conformation. Mona cannot be related, but I wonder about Kreacher (Shane’s sire).

Stout little mustang girl!

Silver and snow

12 12 2011

And a million other colors, too.

Baby Aurora nuzzles mama Alegre … whose dredlocks grow ever longer. The ends brush over the sage and saltbush when she grazes.

Talk about a splash of color! Against the glare of sunlight and snow, from a distance, she looked as black as ‘Rora.

With sister and mama.

It’s not an easy thing, photographing a wee black girl against a big white world.

Easier to shoot white on white!

Especially sprinkled with a dash of copper color!

Pale girls stand out against far blue hills.

She looks serene but for the settling toss of her mane! Caught a pause while she was rolling.

Isn’t she shiny and gorgeous? Looks so much like daddy Bounce.

Beloved boy is taking excellent care of her …

… of them all.

Silver, shining.

Storm Shadow

11 12 2011

On a bright and shining day. 🙂

Shadow and Storm. They were waiting for Aspen’s band, who were apparently waiting for Sundance’s band to drink down in the arroyo. Shadow would get impatient and wander away. Storm would turn his head to look at her, then go back to watching the other horses. Patience of a … wild horse, that one. 😉 No sign of David, though Duke and Kreacher were not too far to the west, and Bounce, Tenaz and Seven were together far to the northeast. (They were fairly close together last week, all together, a bit east of this location.)

She’ll be 5 in the spring. He’ll be 4 the end of July.

Shadow against the La Sals (which are in Utah, this east, Colorado side of Moab).

He stood on that ridge for a long time, watching and waiting, His ridge falls away to a little bench above the actual arroyo, and I’m on the other side of it. We’re about in the heart of the basin right here.

I love how furry and handsome and shiny they are!

Hollywood & Juniper

11 12 2011

Nope, not daddy and daughter, not even stepdaddy. Just a big playmate who tolerates a little girl’s energy. 🙂

Fuzzy, furry filly! Feeling frisky in the frozen-ness! (Ha!)

He’s pretending to graze while he checks me out.

Daddy Comanche has her back.

Oh, the language of horses … Juniper hangs right with him, apparently disregarding completely the message of the ears. For Piedra, though, she has a healthy respect. And despite Holls’ terrible ferociousness (mm hmm) … he’s such a sweetheart with her. 🙂

Don’t you love his warmth against the cold?

Drinks at dusk

28 11 2011

Thank you all for your votes! So very much appreciated! It makes a hard process a little easier. 🙂

Some more pix from last week’s visit. Despite the low sun, I walked out to Hollywood and Comanche’s, even though they were already on the shady side of Flat Top and the sun set before I even got to them … but I wouldn’t have missed the visit.

Last light on McKenna Peak and the unnamed promontory.

Reflected light … it must have bounced off the far hills – the sun had set on the other side of this hill.

Hollywood was standing sentinel on top of the hill (one of the finger ridges that lead up to Flat Top’s top), and Juniper ran up to him …

Then he play-chased her down to where Piedra was, both of them bucking and kicking up their heels. The poor quality is because my ISO was cranked as high as it would go! But I liked the moment of suspension. 🙂

Then it was time for their evening drink at the pond. I was a little surprised to see Comanche drink right next to Piedra, who was right next to Hollywood.

He did drink next to Kestrel, too, though.

All together.

Juniper, her reflection and Piedra – love how they all line up.

Piedra grazing after drinking.

Mama Kestrel and Juniper in amazing reflected glowing after-sunset light.

Last light on the La Sals.

Comanche, one of the very last pix I took that evening.

Wow-gorgeous.
