Glowy girls

Houdini, Alegre and Maia

Three of the most gorgeous girls in the basin: Houdini, Alegre and Maia. 🙂

Hollywood; Spring Creek canyon, La Sal Mountains

Does this photo remind you of fall?

Hard to believe spring is – basically – here. Seems like it has been here since last fall. It’s good to see those old, golden grasses. … But it’d be really nice to see some green … after some moisture.

March-as-Colorado’s-wettest-month isn’t looking so wet … for the second year.

Hayden

Hayden enjoys a perfect March day in Spring Creek Basin. Nice … and very dry. It doesn’t appear to be bothering the horses yet, and they still have fairly plentiful water sources.

Madison and Temple

Because we have mud, we’re happy.

But we could use some that isn’t just at the edges of ponds. 🙂 Temple and Madison surely agree!

Such a light

Comanche

Comanche would look much more dignified … if he didn’t have the cutest stallion-belly ever. 🙂

Soft and pretty

6 03 2018

Winona

Pretty Winona. It’s hard to catch her fast enough to lock focus before she puts her head down again to graze. The out-of-focus softness in the pic is a scraggly greasewood. I had time just to aim and hit the shutter, and her head was down again. 🙂

Alert

5 03 2018

Sundance

Sundance is alert to a commotion of bands at the nearest pond, which was not too close.

But a stallion can never be too sure. And who knows what he learns by watching the others?

Our hoped-for snow came to naught. It blew. It swirled. It ended up in Wyoming (based on how hard the wind was blowing out of the south). The ground never even got wet. Next time …

Stopover, Spring Creek Basin style

Canada goose on roller-coaster ridge pond.

She gets a perfect 10 for nailing her landing. 🙂

And she totally knows how to rock a pose.

Canada goose on roller-coaster ridge pond; Kwana

Not quite synchronized, but we’ll give them props for interspecies partnership. 🙂

Two bands were at the pond with the goose (and though I called it “her” and “she,” I don’t actually know its gender), and they were very interested in her bold vocalizations. She was by herself; hopefully her mate (?) will join her soon. Tis the season.

The best beige

Kestrel

Always calm, always wise Kestrel. We hope the wind is bringing moisture.

Maybe more …

Storm; McKenna Peak, Temple Butte

… is coming Sunday. 🙂
