Three of four

21 08 2012

Comanche’s and Hollywood’s bands were hanging out near Grey/Traveler’s band – and with Duke.

Mama Kestrel and baby Madison with daddy Comanche. Juniper close by.

Welcome clouds brought a few heavy sprinkles this morning … lighter sprinkles later. I don’t think it’s too greedy to pray for more rain? It has gotten really hot and really dry again. Rain would be as welcome as the clouds!

Tolerance (stallion perspective)

20 08 2012

I got to watch young Skywalker trying to get stepdaddy Sundance to play recently. And I had to laugh at the way it “ended.”

First “invitation” to play.

Sundance responded half-heartedly, which led to Skywalker baby clacking, and Sundance resumed his grazing. This was the second invitation.

So Sky launches the tried-and-true tactic of babies everywhere: Go for the hocks.

Sundance’s response. Again, half-hearted (there was no actual kicking involved).

But Sky now is wise to papa’s avoidance, and he continues (maybe he recently made acquaintance with Badger at the spring?) until Sundance indulges him.

At which point, baby runs straight to Mama. 🙂

I hope this brings a chuckle to your day!

Chrome

20 08 2012

Wild Chrome at the trickle. I’m not sure who he was looking at here; the other horses had walked away to the right, and his own girls were still behind him.

Sync’d

19 08 2012

Well, nearly synchronized!

Aren’t they handsome, these young misters?

Mud games

18 08 2012

Sometimes, even a little dip will do ya.

When it was Chrome’s band’s turn to drink at the trickle, they did, and then Winona decided there was more opportunity promised by the little mud hole.

Can you tell from this angle (uphill) that the pool at the trickle isn’t much bigger than Winona?

Size did not deter our girl.

Two seconds down, and she was up!

Yucky drippy muddy girl.

And proud of it!

Happy girl couldn’t  convince Chrome that black mud is the season’s new, well, black!

Hayden

17 08 2012

My, hasn’t he grown up all handsome!

Hayden, son of Grey/Traveler and Jif.

Youngsters

16 08 2012

Oh, I still think of them as “the little boys,” but they’re not so little anymore! They’re off on their own. Not causing mischief – other than among themselves.

Are they cute or what? Sorry – handsome! If you notice a few legs too many, I assure you there’s no Photoshop trickery. 🙂 Aspen is behind them.

This was taken the same day as the one of Bounce, who was with them, too.

Comanche

16 08 2012

The light was bright and harsh when I took this of Comanche, but I love the graceful sweep of his tail as he follows Kestrel and the girls (Madison and Juniper), who were following Hollywood’s band away from the trickle.

I almost never pass up an opportunity to photograph this handsome mister. He always looks fabulous!

On the move

15 08 2012

Hollywood’s girls walking away from the trickle. Also there were Comanche’s band and Chrome’s band.

From left: Mona, Shane, Temple and Piedra.

We have a considerable amount of haze in our air the last couple of days. Apparently not from any local fires. It’s clear we need our monsoons to step up their moisture production, however. Places are getting rain, but the basin and surrounding Disappointment Valley area are not those lucky places!

All innocence

14 08 2012

All the foals are a joy to watch, but that little Skywalker is an extra gem.

They remind me of Apollo and Mysterium playing.

Who, me?

Soon after this, he turned his attention on stepdaddy Sundance. How fun to watch this bright, inquisitive colt!
