Happy birthday, Winona!

11 05 2011

Beautiful ‘Nona-girl turned 1 today!

What a doll she was – is!

She was such a napper! It seemed like every time I saw them, ‘Nona was napping.

And from the absolute beginning, Comanche – stepdaddy – has been wrapped around her tiny hooves. When Winona was born, Kestrel was with Mahogany and Sundance – and Aspen and Comanche. Comanche quietly took up protection duties, and eventually, he, Kes and ‘Nona split into their own family.

This firstborn daughter has been loved and loved and loved.

Always, something special about her, and she has always reminded me a little of Kestrel’s little sister Hannah – outgoing!

Did I mention loved?

By more than just mama and stepdaddy … ๐Ÿ™‚

One of my all-time favorite pix of the girl.

Such a glamour girl!

With a beautiful sense of humor!

Fairy princess

She does still love her naps!

Happy birthday, treasured girl! Your birthday (gift) came two days early! ๐Ÿ˜‰ (More to come in a few days …)

Happy birthday, Gideon!

11 05 2011

Our little Gideon was a year old Sunday.

From the beginning, I knew this little was different than most of Luna’s.

But not tooooo different – mama Luna loves them all as if they were the one and only.

Mama still loves the mister. He’s the only one of her older babies still with her – Kestrel and Ember are mamas themselves now, and Hannah is with Ember.

About two months ago.

He’s a stinker. ๐Ÿ™‚

He is growing up into such a handsome boy!

Butch has been stepdaddy the past year, but I think they’re brothers, both sons of Steeldust.

Darling boy, happy birthday! You bring us such joy!

Deniz and family

9 05 2011

Here are some pix of – mostly! – Deniz … and some of her with mama Houdini. What a sweet, curious baby girl!

Sisters Terra and Gemma

Do Grey and Houdini have beautiful babies or what?! ๐Ÿ™‚

Some of Seven’s

9 05 2011

Seven’s, Kreacher’s and Grey/Traveler’s bands were hanging out pretty close to each other on my last visit. That can be good in that you can hang out and just watch lots of horses from one vantage point, but it can be a little nervous with multiple families together – especially at this time of year. Unlike some, I don’t really enjoy seeing some of that seasonal chaos between stallions. It’s natural – sure – but it makes me nervous with worry! And with Seven’s being one of the most wary bands in the basin, I wasn’t sure they would be OK with the addition of me to the other bands.

As it turned out, they were fabulous!

I just sat with them for a while.

Roja is by far the most wary, and she stayed the farthest away, but she never appeared worried, and this and a couple of others are the only pix I have of her looking at me – mostly, she grazed!

And though this is what most folks would consider a “blah” photo … it’s a snapshot of triumph to me: Seven and Roja, quiet, calm, grazing, not worried about me.

Shane with them. Like most of the foals, she’s closely attached to her – in this case – stepdaddy.

I love this one of them!

Sigh. What a hunk! ๐Ÿ™‚

Have you spotted the weirdness? What the heck happened to his mane and tail? His mane typically hangs on the left side of his neck; now he has just two dredlocks hanging, and the rest of his mane is in very short wisps! And did you spot how short his tail is? Is it all the result of rubbing? I would have said I’ve never see anything like it … but Kestrel lost most of her mane a year or so that is growing back nicely. It wasn’t maybe as obvious because she’s much younger and didn’t have a long mane to begin with. And Roach – was his roached mane and sparse tail the very first time I saw him natural?? I assumed it wasn’t, but maybe it was.

Just something more to make ya go “hmmmmm.” I think you’ll agree, there’s a lot more to make you go “ahhhhhhh”! ๐Ÿ™‚

Some miscellaneous

9 05 2011

In an effort not to bogart images from my most recent visit, here are some highlights.

Bruiser with his lonnnnnnggggg mane …

He and Milagro are still together. Interestingly, the pintos (including Milagro’s mama, Kiowa, and his little brother and big sisters) were just behind me over the ridge … well, not all the pintos. Chipeta, Puzzle and Ty (an “honorary pinto”!) have split off on their own – a move that has been coming for weeks. Those horses and Chrome’s band were the only ones I didn’t see.

Corona. Look at that wild and wooly mane on that little girl!

Shane – Mona’s and Kreacher’s daughter. Doesn’t she look big and beautiful? She’s almost 8 months old. Most of the youngsters – as usual – are still sporting fuzzy coats, though most of the adults have shed out (though some still have bits of fuzz clinging), and no wonder – the temp Thursday morning when I rolled out of the Jeep at o’dark-thirty was in the 20s!

Sisters Terra and Gemma – Gem-baby was obviously having a glorious time at the Wildcat Spring & Spa!

Happy Mother’s Day!

8 05 2011

For all of these:

From all of “us”:

…

and from daddies, too:

…

Happy Mother’s Day! We love you and appreciate you and thank you for all you do!

XOXO,

Us

Happy birthday, Sable!

7 05 2011

Sable is 2 today!

She’s an auntie (with Fierro there) …

… and a sister …

And I think she’s close to becoming a mom.

Hard to believe, eh?

Happy birthday, Sable-beautiful girl!

Happy birthday, Whisper!

7 05 2011

Whisper was 2 yesterday!

He’s tall and handsome and takes as much after daddy Bounce as he does mama Alegre.

About a week old here.

With mama a couple of weeks ago! A few of his yearmates are off on their own already, but Whisper is still with mama and daddy.

And big sister Gaia went off with her own new family this winter. What a fabulous big sister she was to the little mister.

Playing with daddy Bounce.

Happy birthday, handsome boy – keep your sense of humor and don’t forget your lessons!

‘Don’t be hasty!’

6 05 2011

I was wrong.

Luna’s foal is a he, not a she.

Not missing a beat, Aghavni renamed the little mister Varoujan – “VAR-oo-zhahn” – which means “male dove” in Armenian.

Luna and Varoujan catching a few winks at dawn.

Still a little bit of shadow from the east ridges, but mama and baby are in the spotlight! Brumley Point in the background.

It was a gorgeous, gorgeous morning that started out at about 25 degrees! Once the sun lit us, it warmed up quickly and became T-shirt and shorts weather.

While I did mention the Armenian (Aghavni) and Turkish (Servet) journalists visiting Durango and getting a taste of our small-town American journalism, I don’t think I posted a link to a story about them.ย  The article is a good one, but it doesn’t begin to do justice to the depth of knowledge these two have. It has been fascinating having them in Durango. Our visit to the basin last week will stand out as – truly – one of the best!

Aghavni and Servet wrote stories for our paper about their countries’ reactions to the finding and killing of Osama bin Laden. With their professional backgrounds (to say the least), it’s possibly the most amazing occurrence of “it’s a small world” with that happening while they were in Durango I think I’ve ever known.

Aghavni’s story.

Servet’s story.

Our Varoujan … because the world needs more doves and because peace is worth sharing.

A family for …

6 05 2011

One of the first groups of horses I saw this week was the new – and growing – boy band, led somewhat intermittently by Duke. He seems to let them go when they wander outside what I’ve come to think of as his territory … but he blew that theory out of the water this week by leaving the boys “home” and wandering (alone) halfway across the basin. When I first saw them, Duke and Twister were standing together and three boys were playing together.

Wait, three? Was Storm back with Cuatro and Ze? No, wrong coloring (and he’s still with Baylee and Tenaz). But from the distance, I couldn’t tell.

When I got to a better vantage point, I found Duke above Spring Creek (which is NOT a flowing creek in the usual sense of the word – it never flows continuously – it has some water seeping up in places), looking down into it, and I thought the boys had found water. I waited, Duke walked along the top, crossed, came up the other side … climbed a hill – alone. Change happens just that fast! With no two-legged the wiser. I have no idea where they went, whether they outran Duke … or whether he let them.

The next day, I spotted four boys waaaaaaay over on the western edge of the basin, and I started to have an idea about that fourth mystery horse. I found Duke later, alone, far from “home.”

The current make-up of the boy band is a 4-year-old and three 2-year-olds (one will be 2 in about a week).

And this is the new familia:

Though Iya looks like Bones in color and her big blaze exclusively, it tugs at my heart to see her with Poco and Roach – in *their* home territory. By a friend’s weekend photos, this happened sometime after Sunday morning. You know who that fourth horse is now, with the boys? I never got close enough to their end of the basin before they left to take pix, but Sage has joined the boy band. (Insert guitar riff here. ๐Ÿ™‚ )

I’ve decided to name the colt Cougar after our encounter last week with a mountain lion just southeast of the basin. I hope it will serve him as a talisman of protection, rather than a jinx. It’s a bit of a tough-guy name for a baby, but it’s a great name for the stallionย  I hope he grows up to be …

Roach’s solo adventure of a week or so ago left him with a collection of healing scabs on his neck. And speaking of Roach … an odd happening with another stallion has me wondering whether Roach’s roach all those years ago may have been natural after all. I have no explanation for either. To come.
