Because you can’t have too many (pix of) ponies under the rainbow. 🙂

Only a thousand?
19 10 2015Because a million words wouldn’t cover the range of joy and love I feel for these mustangs of Spring Creek Basin.
Every. Single. Day.

Sunset Juniper
18 10 2015The second rifle (hunting) season started yesterday in Colorado. Third season is the busiest season here, but traffic already has increased noticeably – including in Spring Creek Basin.
Unfortunately, a group of multiple people on ATVs and UTVs not only rode/drove off a designated road, damaging the basin’s fragile soil and vegetation (illegal), they rode/drove into McKenna Peak Wilderness Study Area (where motor vehicles are not allowed, making that activity also illegal). While they were at it, they disturbed the band I was with so much that said band ran all the way across the basin.
Fortunately, after sunset, I found the band, resting at peace. All OK.

NMA/CO to show ‘Unbranded’
16 10 2015The Colorado chapter of the National Mustang Association will feature a showing of “Unbranded” at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, at the Sunflower Theatre in Cortez, Colo. See the above for more information. If you’re local, we’d love to see you there!
Visit NMA/CO’s website to purchase tickets online.
“Unbranded” is the story of four Texas Aggies and their 16 mustangs on a journey across some of America’s most stunning public lands, from Mexico to Canada. It’s a must-see testament to the mustangs that represent the freedom and pioneering spirit on which America was built.

Coming to water
15 10 2015Mustangs from different bands form a line to water – a still-nicely-filled pond in the middle of Spring Creek Basin. Two of the basin’s icons – McKenna Peak and Temple Butte – fill the horizon and frame the magic.
Summer monsoons didn’t materialize here in the southwestern corner of the state, and we’re looking for autumn rains somewhere in all these blue, blue, cloudless skies. Fortunately, some raindrops have returned to our forecast. Crossing fingers and hooves.

Elder and younger
12 10 2015Skywalker is one of the youngest bachelor stallions in Spring Creek Basin; Duke is one of the oldest. It’s fascinating to watch the elder mustangs mentor the younger.
