Skywalker.

‘Nuff said!

(Isn’t he a little dream boat?! :))

Raven & Skywalker

24 09 2012

Like mama, like son.

I could post photos of this handsome pair every day! Look how shiny and beautiful Raven is. And that Skywalker is a big boy! His size reminds me of Apollo, but he doesn’t look much like his big brother.

Do you see the far hill in the background? That’s aspen gold. How can it possibly be fall already?! But the season is turning … my favorite!

OK, one more. That Skywalker! Love his expressions!

How about one with stepdaddy Sundance for good measure? And this angle shows mama’s and son’s spots. Can you see better from this side how Skywalker is greying around his spot?

The background from this angle shows where McKenna Peak Wilderness Study Area overlaps Spring Creek Basin Herd Management Area – and we’re standing in part of the herd management area that also is part of the WSA. The big hill is the lower flanks of Brumley Point. Our boundary fence basically comes down that far right side. The WSA continues on eastish and northish (and southish from this vantage). Round Top and north are leftish.

That’s a lot of -ish.

No -ish, ands or buts about it, this boy is straight up CUTE!

Sister, brother

Always handsome, this pair.

Skywalker with big sister Mysterium.

This band has been relatively elusive lately; this photo is from late August. I last saw them last week, way up high above the northwest valley toward Klondike Basin. A couple of Forest Service folks – H and W – brought Pinch and Jammer and Traveler (!), and we rode some fence and fixed some fence. It was a great couple of days, and the mustangs are safer because of it!

Mirror, mirror

Raven and Skywalker.

From a couple of weeks ago now, from a gorgeous evening on a hillside. Mama and her baby boy. Aren’t they divine!

Tolerance (stallion perspective)

20 08 2012

I got to watch young Skywalker trying to get stepdaddy Sundance to play recently. And I had to laugh at the way it “ended.”

First “invitation” to play.

Sundance responded half-heartedly, which led to Skywalker baby clacking, and Sundance resumed his grazing. This was the second invitation.

So Sky launches the tried-and-true tactic of babies everywhere: Go for the hocks.

Sundance’s response. Again, half-hearted (there was no actual kicking involved).

But Sky now is wise to papa’s avoidance, and he continues (maybe he recently made acquaintance with Badger at the spring?) until Sundance indulges him.

At which point, baby runs straight to Mama. 🙂

I hope this brings a chuckle to your day!

All innocence

All the foals are a joy to watch, but that little Skywalker is an extra gem.

They remind me of Apollo and Mysterium playing.

Who, me?

Soon after this, he turned his attention on stepdaddy Sundance. How fun to watch this bright, inquisitive colt!

Next

And here’s the followup pic that prompts the “is she pregnant” question:

I’ve been amazed that Mysterium has still been nursing. My experience with the mares is that they start kicking off their babies about three months or so before they’re due to foal again.

So maybe pregnant … but not by her due date!? Mysterium will be 1 year old on Aug. 21!

Makes ya go hmm.

Terra update to come.

Sky and light

Raven and her mini me:

Isn’t it amazing how alike they are?

You can see him already going grey.

What a little sweetheart of a baby boy!

Walkin’ with baby

Or “who can resist,” part 2!

That face! That look!

Melted. 🙂

Mister Skywalker is going very grey in his handsome little face.

I made a zoom-zoom trip into the basin this evening to check water sources. Only three ponds are still dry, and one is scheduled to be dug out as soon as the Forest Service gets to it (this week?). As hot and dry as it was this year before the rains finally hit, three ponds never went dry – better than years past when they’ve all gone dry! There’s even some green in them thar hills – very welcome to see. The ponies are very healthy. A new friend votes “fat mustang” for Terra. 🙂 Still waiting. Kootenai, almost a month from her due date, also is looking great.

Sweet daughter

2 07 2012

Not so much time to put together long, narrative posts, or even to go through photos from visits. So that’s the reason for the single-photo posts; something in my recent files catches my eye, and I tweak it and share it as a snapshot into the horses’ lives. It is hot and dry, too, and that is draining for humans, if not the horses, who seem to go on, life as usual.

Kinda funny at the same time that it’s a sweet moment between Mysterium and Kootenai. Two faces … and two butts. 🙂

I’m loving Myst’s “beauty spot.” It’s just a little scar, but it’s perfectly placed, eh? She carries it off.
