What’s good?
2 03 2015Don’t you love their expressions? Tesora is working to find her own groceries, and Seneca is seeming to politely ask if she can share. A moment later, Tesora told Seneca to go work for her own groceries. Seneca didn’t seem to mind.

Rare
1 03 2015So rare … a day in Disappointment Valley without shadow. Even today, with clouds and snow – and no … then snow … then no – we had sunshine. And we had Shadow. And Shadow was content enough to nap, surrounded by her band.
Oh, peaceful heart.
**********
Yes, more snow fell – on and off. It’s so warm, it melts nearly on contact with the ground.
The valley is white. There’s still quite a bit of snow; there’s a LOT of mud, which we view as the wonderful sign of moisture seeping, sinking, soaking into the thirsty earth.

Knee, high
26 02 2015Reya lifts her knee high to paw through 18 (or so) inches of new snow after nearly two full days of snow in Spring Creek Basin, Disappointment Valley and Southwest Colorado.
It’s melting fast. Under and around trees, the ground already is bare of snow (!). Can you hear the slurping, gulping of the thirsty earth? Yes. Yes, you can. 🙂
More is coming. Our arms are open wide.

After worry … happy
24 02 2015We’ve been waiting for winter all, well, winter.
Sometimes, wishes DO come true.
The entire region got snow for pretty much two solid days.
Middle and lower Disappointment Valley got about 14 to 18 inches of snow.
If you live in Boston, you’re laughing. If you live in Southwest Colorado, you’re on your knees thanking all the gods and goddesses of nature. I’m on my knees, thankful, grateful. Relieved.
This is our summer grass, our summer ponds and creeks and rivers. This, my friends, is life in a dry land.
Welcome, winter. Thanks for the snow. 🙂

Caught
22 02 2015The legs of one of his band members frame Comanche in sunlit and shadowed edges. How handsome is that hunky horse?! 🙂

Peak beauty
21 02 2015Still-fuzzy (and shedding) Seneca and Chipeta look gorgeous below McKenna Peak and Temple Butte.
The forecast shows wet stuff. Please, please, let us get some wet stuff.

Deadline approaching to comment on bait trapping proposal
19 02 2015The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign released an action alert yesterday urging comments on our scoping period to encourage BLM to move to bait trapping and away from helicopters when necessary to “gather” our mustangs. Check it out here. All the pertinent links are listed there. Please feel free to add personal comments, especially if you’ve spent time with our Spring Creek Basin mustangs!
** The deadline is Saturday, Feb. 28. **
Many, many thanks to all of you who have submitted comments. BLM managers have told us they’ve received lots of comments already – and all positive in support of bait trapping in the future! Thank you, thank you!
