Catching the runners

26 01 2026

The snow Saturday morning lured me into Spring Creek Basin twice that day. The first time was shortly after sunrise, and while the mustangs were frustratingly far from any accessible areas, the pronghorns were fascinatingly cooperative! While that sort of looks like a giant cave opening behind them, that’s the north rim of Spring Creek canyon (viewed from the southeastish). The pic of Chipeta yesterday was taken much later in the day; compare the melting that had been at work.

Pronghorns (not actually antelope) are North America’s fastest land mammals. Here, they were just moseying. When they *really* run, they are FAST!

They’re more sprinters than marathon runners … and thankfully for me and my camera, they’re wonderfully curious. πŸ™‚

(Note that the landscape doesn’t look like that AT ALL by this morning (or even by yesterday morning). It was cold (high of 34F?), but in Colorado, sunlight means even more than temperature.)

I think we have between 18 inches & 2 feet of snow -still flurrying – it was a challenge to get out & feed the deer last night – but even with it still snowing hard theydid come down so had to haul my butt out there. If I could send you some (snow) I would!! Dont think it works that way.

Wow! I was happy with (maybe) 2 INCHES. πŸ™‚ I’m sure the deer are grateful for the feed in difficult conditions. Keeps you active, doing it! … What? You can’t set up a giant, industrial-size fan and blow all that snow back west?? Ha ha ha! πŸ™‚

Well, maybe some of it – not all of it – it IS winter – I have to laugh at some of the “news” people etc getting so excited about a foot or two of snow. I remember what it used to look like here in NYS when I was a kid – there was about 3-4 feet of grass (summer) between the street & the sidewalk & we would build tunnels thru the snow on that piece of ground. Didnt get as many snow days back then either! I’m fortunate that my son has a plow truck.

Even in the 20-plus years I’ve been visiting Spring Creek Basin, the “normality” of abundant snowfall in the winter has declined noticeably. These days, any moisture seems like a cause to get excited. πŸ™‚

Gorgeous pronghorns in the snow, TJ! What beautiful photos of those boys and girls. I’m amazed at their relative tolerance of your presence; whenever we spot them they exit the stage with blazing speed! Loving the snow, even if it is just a couple of inches.

I wouldn’t say they’re suuuuuper tolerant. πŸ™‚ In the first pic, they were fairly far away, but then they actually came toward me … then past in fits and starts. They see me fairly often, and this group has been around, and together, for at least the last few months. I almost got a pic of them with a group of mustangs last week, but by the time I got my camera out and trained on them, they were already vamoosing. πŸ™‚

That sounds about like us. Did your temps plummet? We got more of the cold, less of the snow. πŸ™‚ But I’m glad we got the snow we DID get.
