We have had a pretty amazing surge of rain this fall – contrary to the forecasts for a dryer-than-usual fall. Or maybe that was for Colorado in general, which doesn’t seem to remember sometimes that our southwestern corner IS, in fact, still within the Centennial State’s borders. (And although we’re still dry – we *are* high desert, after all – other parts of Colorado are in (much) more severe drought than we are now. The U.S. Drought Monitor has reduced us to “abnormally dry.”)
Lower Disappointment Valley (as the elevation changes – and it changes rather dramatically from upper to very lower – rainfall amounts vary wildly) has gotten at least 1.84 inches of rain just in October. … Are you paying attention? That’s just the last few days! To put that in perspective, we got just 2 inches of liquid moisture between last Dec. 1 and this April 1 (that’s liquid from snow). Wowza.
We’re kinda dancin’ a bit ’round here. š

The pix in this post are of Temple Butte … different perspectives than normally seen from the interior of Spring Creek Basin. The top pic was taken from southeast of the southernmost basin boundary (Spring Creek Basin is basically on the *other* side of it from that perspective), and the one above was taken from below the last/southern/southeasternmost drainage in the basin – both from Disappointment Road.
So glad for the moisture! Hope you get a lot more!
This fall, it’s like the gift that keeps on giving. I’m not sure why or how, but I’m extraordinarily grateful for all of the moisture! š
I saw that too, TJ; long range predictions at NOAA for Sept and Oct were for below normal precipitation…boy were they wrong! And we are grateful for that whiff! What a surprise – and such a blessing – that it has been just the opposite. Reminds me once again that Someone else is in charge. We’re not. And great views of Temple Butte make for a wonderful beginning to the day! Beautiful.
I keep thinking they (“they”) must have meant *later* in the fall … ?? Dunno, but I’m sure glad we’re getting what we’re getting, especially if it IS going to be the dry winter we’re dreading. Travel is a little, uh, challenging right now … but I’ll take it with the welcome rain! š
Here two — I’m pretty sure (if I counted right) the farmers got 4 hay cuttings this summer. I think two is expected, three is good luck and four? I hope they’re wrong about winter being dry. If we get a good snow, I don’t think Bear and I will ever come inside.
Here too…yikes I type fast, but not always well…
That’s great about the hay and farmers there. My folks in Texas are usually that lucky … but not this year. It’s BAD dry there, and I think they got really only one cutting. I’m like you, though, about the winter and hoping for snow! Bring it on!
Stunning and so glad for the moisture.
Always. š
I am stunned!
Me, too. Often. š
