Gaia and Storm enjoy a little couple time on a ridge a bit southwest of McKenna Peak.
Finding them was a definite case of being in the absolute right place at the absolute right time; I saw Gaia and another horse from a distance … and then they disappeared again. I didn’t see them on my hike out to them until I was below their ridge, where another band member was napping just visible at the near-top of the ridge.
I’m always glad to see these guys. They’re so rarely seen!
Great detective work !! Really good to see how well theyβre doing !
As usual, I didn’t expect to see them, even though/especially because I went in specifically looking for them (!), and of course, it was at the very end, when I thought to try one last idea of hiking up a ridge I didn’t think was terribly great for my ankle … and then ended up hiking farther/harder anyway! π And yes, although they favor one of the driest areas of the basin, they’re doing very well!
Good you found them! They look good!
I’m so glad, and they so do! π
Great looking couple!
Storm and Gaia have been together for a very long time. π
They have the same haircut!
Ha – they do! π Hers looks like it’s been pulled for a show! I still don’t know how it happens. There’s a foal and a yearling in the band, but I’ve never seen them chewing manes or tails … and they’re so *even*!
Very sweetπ

The happy couple. So nice to see Storm again! He and his girls are certainly the elusive ones these days.
For the last couple of years, they really have stayed in the back-of-beyond places. I don’t know for sure why, of course, but I was with them a few years ago when a whole caravan of ATVs and side-by-sides grumbled and roared up to them – FAR off a road. I don’t think the people even understood that they were doing something wrong. I was so upset, but that was nothing compared with how upset the horses were (and they had a newish foal at the time). … So I’m not sorry that they’re elusive. π
