They are the magic

Hollywood’s band on a bench just below the top of Round Top in Spring Creek Basin. The top is just above my right shoulder. This is looking basically northwestish, and the basin stretches across the middle background.

Do you know what grasses they are eating?

In general? Indian ricegrass, galleta, grama, alkali sacaton, sand dropseed, cheat grass … You know it’s a bad year when even the cheat grass doesn’t grow. There’s some grass, but in this terrible drought year,it’s stunted and/or not growing at all. Fortunately, they also eat salt-desert shrubs such as greasewood, four-wing saltbush and shadscale. They also eat Russian thistle (aka tumbleweed) when it’s young and green and not stickery yet. Sunflowers (not sure what specific kind) when they grow (again, not so much this year). Other little close-to-the-ground-growing things I can’t identify.
