‘PZP: Where hope, science and mustangs meet’

6 01 2016

Thanks to Kat Wilder for her Writers on the Range op-ed in High Country News. πŸ™‚

It’s getting harder and harder to deny PZP and its success!

Houdini

This is Houdini, who, at best guess, is somewhere north of 25 years old. She shows her age but otherwise looks great. She has contributed her genetics to Spring Creek Basin and has daughters and granddaughters and grandsons (at least) still wild in Spring Creek Basin.

I’ve known at least two elder mares that have had foals in the spring and died that fall, leaving their weanlings as orphans. Houdini has contributed her genetics and deserves a long, healthy lifeΒ  as the wild, wise mustang mare she is, adding her knowledge to the whole herd.

PZP makes that possible.

What a beauty she is! PZP must be used to support the future of wild horses.

Wonderful!!! All mammals that birth run the risk of friable (worn out) uterus’ and death, if they continue birthing into old age. Often times, the injury (ruptured or torn uterus) takes the foal with them.

Yes. I read that HCN article and Kat did a marvelous job!
We have to save the horses from round ups and LTH pens…and PZP is the best alternative. I mean, what are we going to do, sit around and do nothing? Your herd is living proof that it works. And it’s a whole lot better than the proposal to spay, for goodness sakes!
It is an excellent article…on a positive outlook. That’s what we need right now.
Have an awesome day, TJ!

Kudos to all of you TJ who have made this management approach a reality. I am so grateful we can have beautiful “old girls” like this still alive and free. The Spring Creek Basin success should be a model for the entire country.

Great article! Hope it gets lots and lots of exposure via print and/or social media! Superb photo of Houdini! Had forgotten just how old she’s getting to be! So very proud of you and the work you’re doing there! πŸ™‚

Thank you, TJ, for your hard wok and constant inspiration, all for the love of horses! Thank you for sharing the HCN piece here. And, mostly, for sharing Houdini with me today, as I sit in a classroom in a seemingly very distant Santa Fe. She is lovely. I write for her, and for all the Spring Creek Basin mustangs, the horses at the sanctuary, those at my home, those in captivity, and those running free. Big thanks and hugs to all of you!

To Kat Wilder: Santa Fe isn’t really all that distant from your home which is (we feel) part of ours! We will all be the richer for your presence and work at IAIA. It’s just up the road from us… You’ll do VERY well there. Just be you…

TJ – Again, thanks for just Being You! πŸ™‚
