See the little bright spot above Rowan? That’s a dragonfly!
I didn’t see it until I saw the pic, but earlier, I’d seen two chasing each other around and wished I could have caught them on the camera.
Dragonflies! Still? If you know anything about the life cycle of dragonflies, let me know. And do they need water? Standing water? The band was a fair bit uphill from Spring Creek canyon and the water in the bottom, but I don’t know where there was any closer water.
Who doesn’t love a gorgeous mustang girl and a glittering dragonfly in September. 🙂

Ah! Now that is interesting. Would you believe that we don’t have fireflies or lightning bugs here? Not enough water. … Which is to say: not enough water permanently enough. But I have met a guy who visited the basin a couple of times who studies fireflies and their movements and patterns, etc. He looks for them all over the West (I think he has moved back East now). Fascinating!
Not as many fireflies these days.

You know, I’d never even thought about NOT seeing them here until I met that guy, who was super nice and informative. Now I think about their lack. We’re losing so much …
the one thing I know for sure about these wonders is they eat deer flies. Whenever I see two of them mating (and they do this in the air) I think, “Good dragon flies, good dragon flies.” This is the time of year I often see them.
Ohhhh … that makes me love them more! We don’t have too many deer flies (at least, what I know as deer flies) here, but in Texas (where I sort of grew up and where my parents live) and Ohio (where my grandparents all lived and we rode horses and ponies on visits), the deer flies were H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E. We have these big, fat (!?), black buzzers that the mustangs HATE. When I see a horse bucking and kicking around “for no reason,” I can tell you at a mile those big black things are the cause. I hope the recent rains bring out more dragonflies! Thanks for that info! 🙂
