The art of crystal (snow)

8 01 2024

Well, we kinda got skunked again on snow – the big, hyped, “inches and inches are coming!” winter-weather-warning snowfall – yesterday, but we do have snow on the ground still from Friday’s surprise event – thank goodness. We got no measurable snow from Sunday, though we did have a couple of brief waves of blowing flakes, and there was snow all around Disappointment Valley.

The following pix are of snow/ice crystals on grass stalks and sagebrush in Spring Creek Basin on Friday.

It was so much more beautiful and magical than I can convey in photos.

The photos are beautiful – wish snow for you.
From what I see of the weather our 6 inches or so will likely melt in 40 degree weather later this week – and RAIN!!!!
Hope we both get snow!!

Crazy ol’ Ma Nature dropped 3 inches of snow on us overnight/early morning! Unlike you, our temps are dropping like crazy the next week. Hope you get snow!

Such beautiful little frost “sculptures,” TJ! These are such wonderful photos, and I appreciate your perseverance being out in that glacial cold to capture some of nature’s art! πŸ₯Ά

That day wasn’t too cold (the sunshine does wonders), but today was darn cold with the wind! After I complained (again), I woke up to 3 inches of fresh snow this morning! Ha – I can’t keep track of the craziness! But at least we were finally included in the big storm. πŸ™‚

Thanks, Puller. πŸ™‚ I love those tiny bits of beauty – they are not easy to photograph with a very long telephoto lens!

I will never, ever forget the gorgeousity one morning in the San Luis Valley when another woman and I were hauling mustangs a couple of winters ago. The whole world was crystalline. It wasn’t a time for photos – and it was SO COLD – but it was absolutely stunning. This wasn’t that, but it was still beautiful. πŸ™‚

I had no idea whether the lens was focusing on the grasses and ice crystals or not – and they were waving in the breeze, making it even more difficult. … But they were too, too pretty not to at least try. πŸ™‚ And the long lens does a lovely job with wildflowers. … For everything, you have to be a fair distance away, though!
