Quiet returns

And so does the wildlife. πŸ™‚

Up, up they go.

As the elk disappeared over the ridge, some other visitors made a fly-by appearance.

They paused for a quick family portrait … then went on up and over and were gone with the wind.

(The WIND! It has been BRUTAL the last two days, especially.)

WOW! That is still SO dry there and that wind won’t help. 😦 Is this your annual cervid migration?

Yes/no, sort of/kind of, not really … but part of … sort of? πŸ™‚ They don’t “migrate” in the sense that they hit the trail and move in orderly fashion from one place to another … and it’s not really a once-a-year kind of thing that they’re here (and/or visible) but more (at least?) twice-ish a year (again, that they’re more visible). And this group of girls – I think, maybe – stays here year-ish-round. I don’t often see them, but I sometimes find signs of them when I don’t expect to (in other parts of the year). As spring is springing and vegetation is growing (though, as you mention, it’s still so almost-unbearably dry that it’s hard to see, even looking for it, as I am), they’re “migrating” through the area – maybe I should say around the area – looking for things to browse and water to drink. Disappointment Creek is flowing muddily in its bed, so at least that’s water for the critters that can get to it (the Spring Creek Basin mustangs don’t have access to it), so that’s also a draw for the deer and elk. As temps rise, so will the deer and elk – or most of them – into the higher and hopefully cooler country to the south. It’s kind of in-between country, and our wildlife also tends toward that habit … here for the good stuff … fading away when the good stuff gets gone. That’s a long reply, and vague, but there you are. πŸ™‚

Headin’ for the high country! Cool, TJ. Seeing them in their big herds on the move like this is so spectacular. What a bunch of great pics!

It won’t be long, and they’ll be heading for higher ground to have their babies. πŸ™‚
