Another 2.5 inches of snow (at least) fell overnight and Sunday morning in Disappointment Valley, bringing more much-needed moisture. Lots of melting happened Saturday, and the temperature is hovering right at freezing, so lots of melting is happenING.
Interestingly, snowshoes work pretty well when mud is close to the surface under the mud by doing the same thing as on snow: spreading weight over a surface. Of course, the mud isn’t as easy to knock off, but your boots are happier.

Yes, Kestrel. 🙂 She was a weanling when I started documenting the herd in 2007, so she’ll be 14 this year. Amazing.
We’re getting more rain than was predicted. And, lots of wind. Come on rain!
What great news! Must be such a relief to get MORE THAN predicted for a change, let alone in actual fact. 🙂 I’m so glad for your rain – for you *and* for us! It’s hard to tell how much snow we actually got because it’s been relatively warm (up to at least 39 yesterday), so there’s already been a LOT of melting. At least 0.68 inch of water moisture over three days (at the elevation where I live), so that’s not shabby. The slower-melting snow will let it seep in nicely and sweetly. 🙂

Ha – yes. 🙂 It’s pretty soupy out there! Even overnight didn’t get cold enough to firm up the ground. The puddles have only a thin skin of ice this morning.
I love buckskins. Kestrel is a beauty, and her name is quite fitting too. I can see a kestrel outside as I am typing this … how special.

That’s fanTAStic! We’ve had so much melting, it’s hard to tell how much total snow we got … I think about 5 inches. … But only 0.68 inch of water out of that over the two days. Drier snow has produced more water content, so I don’t know about the process by which it squelches, but I’d sure like more. Forecast shows “showers of rain and snow” tomorrow … so as always, I cross my fingers and hope!
Awesome! I do so wonder if their is some rocket scientist OR Nobel prize mathematicians report regarding the same dynamics for snow as for mud given surface/pressure lbs/inch thingees, somewhere! LOL for deep mud that isn’t sorta water lake on the top – or swamp – – LOL glad to see you all got some additional moisture without blizzard of killing proportions delivering it!
