Hell week in the valley

Skywalker, Brumley Point

Skywalker the bold in front of Brumley Point.

Third rifle season starts today. Already for the past few days, the human population of Disappointment Valley is swelling, and not for the good of  some two-leggeds and most four-leggeds. Traffic, traffic, traffic. Every nook and cranny will be filled with large trucks and larger RVs, with ATVs and UTVs that will run the roads at all hours, their occupants drinking beer (I’m already finding and picking up the empty cans along said roads) and carrying guns.

I love autumn. … I hate this week.

Safety first, eh?

Oh TJ, I feel your pain. At any hour??? Seriously? We have limits on when hunting can occur (1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset). Does BLM or F&W patrol these areas? If you are finding beer cans, can you call this in and have them send someone out to patrol? We now have bowhunting allowed in neighborhoods (yes, you read correctly <1/4 acre and up). It is allowed supposedly if 20,000 people using this park, in the afternoon and weekends. 700 acres…don’t you know this is a winning combo.

I think the hours here are pretty close to that – starts here about the 15th.
Living in NY – not so many hunters anymore. I consider that great after having a deer shot with an arrow in my yard standing under the birdfeeder! This was several years ago – called game warden but unfortunately we figured someone stood at the end of our driveway & shot her – arrow went thru her neck & as I found later walking the dog – she managed to get almost to the woods before dying. I have to say – I do not consider whoever this was to be a “hunter”. I’m betting you cant wait for this “season” to be done with.

Oh, what a terrible thing to witness, that poor doe. And you’re right – there’s a distinction between hunters and shooters.

BLM and Colorado Parks and Wildlife rangers DO patrol the area, and I have an excellent relationship with them. But the BLM guy (at least) has half a million surface acres to cover. He’s excellent and very responsive. I’m the trash patrol here. 🙂 I don’t bother those guys with anything trivial so that when I do call, they take me seriously (and they do – again, they’re excellent folks). I’m not sure about the hours allowed for hunting, but hunting/shooting from roads is illegal … and yet. … Plus, the distances out here require a lot of driving.

I believe that the game warden here also has a huge area to cover – seems to me he was about an hour & a half away that time – called the state troopers – one of them came pretty quickly & went around the neighborhood asking if anyone had seen anything. Oh & incidentally this was BEFORE bow season started AND had to have happened, we think, early in the morning. My son had to go up back & drag her down near the road so NYS could pick her up – we asked around but by the time I found her – it was too late to donate her. And it was not far enough away from the house to let her be. Made us both MAD & sick.

I feel for ya. It can be a discouraging scene, with the gun totin’ drinkers. Disregarding the land and making a mess of things.
Not all hunters are clueless. But, still…

Agreed. And still … 🙂 YOU be careful out there, too!

Feeling the agony with you, TJ – hell week indeed. Wish there was some way to limit the numbers of these people swarming around out there. Put up your streamers and stay on alert!

I didn’t tie the streamers this year. BLM/Forest Service put up some extra signs in the valley – including on the way to Spring Creek Basin – that specifically say “No off-road travel.” Hoping that’s a good thing. The first day has been fairly quiet (except that the wind is howling!). Crossing fingers …!

It is amazing to witness the transformation of the extremely quiet and peaceful land become a wild and crazy populated hub bub.
