Shadow ponies

4 06 2011

These ponies shun human contact, and I don’t often see them. It was the fact that I saw them from a distance that I went walking out and found Kiowa’s band and her new little one. Had a brief visit with these guys, just enough to check that everyone was fine, then left them alone.

The only reason I wasn’t freaking out at this point was that I had seen all four before I went out to the pintos, so I knew Coal must have been napping nearby. What did surprise me was how close both David and Shadow allowed me to get with baby napping. Then they stood there for a while, and I DID start to wonder … I thought Shadow would have roused baby right away. That she didn’t … maybe I’m growing on her. 🙂

And then he got up, stretched and walked over to big brother Wind and mama for a snack … Totally cool, this little mister, not a care in the wide world.

And there’s the family! Dark and handsome!

Killian

While I was visiting Spook and Bruiser, Seven’s band came to the pond below us and then moseyed on out. Even that close, which wasn’t close, was too close for wary mama Roja, and off they went. I do love the pic of them trotting through a particularly lush stand of prince’s plume, though! The bay filly is Mona’s and Kreacher’s daughter, Shane.

Roja’s and Seven’s newest son has a new name, courtesy Lynn and Kathy, who braved our crazy weather to visit Spring Creek Basin’s mustangs and were the first to spot the little guy … drum roll, please …

Killian!

I love this name for one of our newest herd members!

Welcome – again – to your world, little Killian. We’re so happy to have you gracing our planet!

Spook and Bruiser

3 06 2011

As I commented last week, Spook, 3, is with Bruiser (NOT Butch – thanks, Lynn, for catching my big typo!). They were far enough away when I saw them last week that I could tell she didn’t have a foal with her but couldn’t tell about her pregnancy status. As you see here, she clearly does not have a foal with her and just as clearly is no longer pregnant. Bruiser looks massive next to her, doesn’t he? She’s pretty small – he’s a short, stout guy!

Judging by the dried blood on her hind legs, it was fairly recently.

They’ve done a fair bit of traveling, this pair, and have ended up in the far eastern part of the basin.

Did I mention the wind was a stiff son-of-a-gun? You can tell by this photo – any wind stout enough to push Bruiser’s heavy mane to the other side of his neck is worth reckoning. I’m surprised I have any sharp photos from the day as much as it was pushing us all around. Day in the life of the ponies!

The Albuquerque news (which we get here in the southwest corner of Colorado, given that we’re in that viewing area and far closer to New Mexico than to Denver) last night showed images of the Duke City shrouded in smoke from a big fire in the Gila Wilderness in Arizona. Wednesday, it got a bit dense here, too, and though I would have believed it was dust because of the wind, it sure smelled smoky. That fire was reported at 60,000 acres last night, almost as big as the 70,000-plus-acre wildfire north of Durango the second year I lived here … Also on the news was a report of a 1,000-acre wildfire on the Carson National Forest in northern New Mexico. The Forest Service manages a herd of wild horses on the Carson … I don’t know where they are in relation to the fire, but include them in your prayers, as well as the firefighters battling all the blazes. It’s dry out there, folks. Really, really dry.

Also wanted to point out what sharp-eyed readers will already have noticed – a healing cut to Bruiser’s upper forearm. Four Corners Back Country Horsemen spied it a few weeks ago during the count, and I hadn’t been able to confirm it until now. It looks to be healing, and he doesn’t seem bothered by it.

Kiowa has a baby!

2 06 2011

I wasn’t expecting Kiowa to foal until the end of the month … which makes for a couple of realizations: She conceived last year on her foaling heat, and she’s now foaling within a month of when she was foaling before she got the PZP-22 in August 2007. Makes ya go hmmm.

From this side, baby looks a lot like big brother Maiku with that white slash over her withers …

… but a little more white on this side!

The wind today was brutal. By early afternoon, the La Sals were visible only as a bare outline against the horizon. The dust in the air wasn’t as thick as I’ve ever seen, but it was a rough day. That said, I saw almost all the horses, including this newest treasure!

What a sweet little spotted baby! Maybe a filly … but maybe not!

Kiowa’s in heat, and Corazon is not happy being odd man out …

With that kind of chaos, they didn’t need me around, so I got some documentary photos of the new baby and left the ponies to the wind.

Happy June

1 06 2011

Have gotten busy the last few days and haven’t been able to tweak new photos let alone post them, but this is one I had tweaked earlier … and really, do I need a specific excuse? Brothers Varoujan and Gideon and mama Luna at left. I’m really not sure what I love more, mamas with their babies, daddies with their babies or big siblings with their littles! You probably know the answer … I love them all! 🙂

Aurora

I’ve decided to call Alegre’s and Bounce’s baby girl Aurora – “dawn.”
