‘Masked Man’

Maiku

Isn’t he cute with his one (visible) bright eye? Friend and mustang adopter Tif recently mentioned a mutual friend, who adopted Maiku’s brother Milagro (now called Skipper). Maiku reminds me so much of Skipper, even though big brother is solid bay.

Maiku

Maiku is barely a pinto, with a slash of white over his withers.

Maiku

Wild pony is well-adapted to the winter, even though this one is terribly mild again so far.

Thank you all for your calendar orders! They’re sold out, and close to $250 is going from ya’ll to the Colorado chapter of the National Mustang Association! Thank you, thank you for your generosity in supporting our Spring Creek Basin mustangs!

Sundance

Whaddya’ll think? Due in March? April? 🙂

Mr. Sundance isn’t missing any groceries this winter.

Sundance

From the time I drove up, parked in the middle of the road, walked out and around, yakked with his young pals and took a bunch of pix, he never moved. Well, he found the energy to prick his ears at me a few times, but mostly he just stood napping and looking handsome.

Come along

Daddy Seven and baby Tesora

Move away. Nothing to see here, says Seven to curious baby Tesora (or he might, if he could talk).

He’s one of the most protective stallions in the basin. Any visit with them is a treat.

22,000 acres; 1 square foot

Kwana and daddy Chrome graze together.

Kwana and daddy Chrome graze together. I love how, with 22,000 acres on which to spread out, two horses occasionally decide the same bit of forage is the most desirable. (Mm hmm.) It happens more often than you’d think.

Mama Reya and baby Spirit at the end of the day on favorite hill.

Reya and baby Spirit were not all that interested in the human and her muddy boots. Or at least they weren’t when said scraping produced no dragons or other fearsome creatures. 🙂

Puzzle, La Sal Mountains

The view made beautiful with a spotted mustang girl in the foreground. Pretty Puzz-lita.

Copper and S’aka

Fuzzy-bear ponies.

The “excitement” began when I started scraping mud off my boots with a rock. Note how Copper is perfectly fine with yearling S’aka taking the lead in figuring out what the crazy human is doing. 🙂

Shadow, Tesora and Puzzle, La Sal Mountains

Seven’s band against a dramatic Spring Creek Basin, Disappointment Valley and La Sal Mountains background. Last day of last year.

Another day, a new year

Corazon, Spirit, Reya, S'aka and Copper on favorite hill at sunset.

The pinto family – and Copper – on the first day of 2014. S’aka and Copper at left, Reya, Corazon and Spirit at right.

Pretty, pretty day. Snow melting. Mud spreading.

Happy Year of the Horse!

2014 Spring Creek Basin mustangs calendar.

Technically, the Chinese Year of the Horse doesn’t start until Feb. 4, but in honor of 2014 and our Spring Creek Basin mustangs, calendars are back!

For lack of planning and time, I removed probably the most fun part: collaborating with all you readers to pick the photos. But I did put together a calendar of images of our Spring Creek Basin mustangs for 2014, and if you buy one, most of your payment will be a donation to the Colorado chapter of the National Mustang Association (keeping just enough to cover my costs), a local group that advocates for these beautiful horses.

2014 Spring Creek Basin mustangs calendar.

The calendars are $20 (I’ll give $14 from each to NMA/CO). The photos are 4 inches by 6 inches, and each photo was taken in the month (in 2013) it represents. Some of the photos were never published on the blog.

Email me at mtbgrrl (at) fone (dot) net with your snail-mail address (for your calendar), and I’ll email you my address (for your check!).* You’ll also be placed on our mailing list for newsletters (if you’re not already listed). You can note your preference for emailed PDFs or snail-mailed paper copies.

As always, thank you so much for your amazing support of our Spring Creek Basin mustangs!

* My physical address has changed. If you have ordered a calendar before, don’t send anything to my old address!

** Zacharias, if you’re reading, one calendar already has your name on it!
