Claret goodness

22 05 2025

As widespread and gloriously blooming as the claret cup cacti are in Spring Creek Basin right now, you’d be surprised at how hard it is to get any in the same frame with any mustang as they graze peacefully in the open or on the treed slopes.

I liked this pic because it also shows Dundee going after the galleta and grama that’s currently coming up plentiful in the basin. After a rough winter and a sparse spring, it’s really nice to see the grass looking good in most areas.

Drinking from nature’s goodness

When I’m taking pix of tiny little things like flowers with my phone, I never know where the focus is going to be, whether I try to make it in a certain place or another certain place. I got the focus on the top flowers in one pic and the bottom flower in the next pic, and I like them both!

The claret cup cacti are now blooming – all of a sudden! – in Spring Creek Basin. They make me so happy. 🙂

So close

This giant claret cup cactus (or cacti in a bundle?!) was amazing, and I tried to get various horses in the same frame with it without success. Alegre wasn’t suuuuuper cooperative in that way, but I managed to get her as she grazed her way from behind a four-wing saltbush – without shaving off part of her face. 🙂

Bloomin’ hedgehogs

“The ‘hedgehogs’ are blooming!” a basin visitor announced the other day, and although that’s not what I call these gorgeous cacti, I knew exactly what he was talking about.

The buds were tightly furled one day, and the next day, they’re open and ready for their buzzing visitors!

Another sure sign of spring in our desert country. 🙂

You can’t tell by this photo of Buckeye and his mares napping, but the wind was *blasting*. It was a little better close to the ground, but it was *ferocious*. Peace is in the perception, eh? (Bia was just out of frame to the left; at one point, they were ALL lying down.)
