They grab these big mouthfuls of snakeweed and mouth them around a few moments, then drop them and go for another bite. … I can’t figure out why.
But, for a few moments, they all look like they’ve picked a big bouquet of dried flowers, which is kinda cute. š

If it’s the same snakeweed as mentioned in articles, it is poisonous to many animals including hores. Therefore, I wonder if it is ‘mulled on’ for a few seconds/minutes and utilized by wild ones as a natural wormer? If eaten, it causes diarrha and abortion.
I’m not sure if it’s the same; that’s what I’ve always heard it called and didn’t know it was (might be) poisonous?! I’ve seen them eating it previously in the winter months, which is one reason I was surprised and stymied by them just chewing it this past fall and winter. I almost never see diarrhea in the wild horses.
