Oh, those boys!

Killian and S'aka

Aren’t they the handsomest? Pals Killian and S’aka dance through the sage on a day too warm for spring in Colorado.

Quiet is golden

Puzzle

All that lovely white has soaked, seeped and settled in.

Pardon the quiet: I’ve had a nice little vacation in Texas, and my folks are having a nice little vacation in Colorado!

Shadow and Puzzle

Round-bellied Shadow and Puzzle like to stick together. They’re two of the most wary mares in the basin. They’re brave together.

Portrait of a wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiild stallion. 🙂

Glare

Chipeta closes her eyes against the glare of sunshine on snow.

Makers of sunglasses must sell more in the state of Colorado than anywhere else on the planet. When leaving home, Coloradans make sure we have our wallet(s), our cell phone(s) and our shades.

There’s a piece of tack for just about everything known to horse-owning humankind. Dogs have doggles. Horses should have, um, horggles? Ha. OK, kidding. But check out Chipeta. She’s not napping, and she’s not blinking; her eyes are simply slitted against the glare of bright sunshine on white, white snow. What a problem to have, eh? 🙂

Dashing through the snow

Seneca, Puzzle, Chipeta and Shadow run in the snow.

While watching the horses from the road with another family in another vehicle, the horses suddenly got a wild hair and galloped away a short distance. Ah, wild horses, galloping in the snow. 🙂 We had to be quick with our shutters; it didn’t last long.

Ty gets amorous with Chipeta.

What’s good?

2 03 2015

Seneca seems to ask Tesora what good things she's finding in the snow.

Don’t you love their expressions? Tesora is working to find her own groceries, and Seneca is seeming to politely ask if she can share. A moment later, Tesora told Seneca to go work for her own groceries. Seneca didn’t seem to mind.

Rare

Shadow

So rare … a day in Disappointment Valley without shadow. Even today, with clouds and snow – and no … then snow … then no – we had sunshine. And we had Shadow. And Shadow was content enough to nap, surrounded by her band.

Oh, peaceful heart.

**********

Yes, more snow fell – on and off. It’s so warm, it melts nearly on contact with the ground.

The valley is white. There’s still quite a bit of snow; there’s a LOT of mud, which we view as the wonderful sign of moisture seeping, sinking, soaking into the thirsty earth.
