One year

16 09 2012

A year ago today, our roundup started, a day late because of rain. Clear, clear skies this year. Many changes. Many things the same. Some things better. Some things, not so much.

We lost some. We gained more.

I like to think positively and look ahead.

But it’s impossible not to remember.

Management of our Spring Creek Basin mustangs is moving in a positive direction, and I think the great condition of our horses and range proves that.

Without proper management, we wont be able to share these wonderful creatures with future generations. These mustangs are truly a living symbol of our heritage and should be appreciated in both in their wild, natural state as well as their adopted, domesticated life. Not a day goes by that we don’t admire the special attributes our adopted Spring Creek mustangs share with us. When we brought them back “home” for the spring count this year (it was their first time back since they were gathered), we didn’t know how they would respond. They knew where they were, and it was very emotional to watch Breeze as he reflectively looked over on what remained of his pinto band, but they also knew it wasn’t their home any longer. Now we know what that nicker means every time we walk in the barn: they have also adopted us.

I can’t believe it’s been a year. Animals are far better at moving on than humans are. Not because they want to, but because they have to.

Many have worked for years for the safety, peace and rangeland of the horses. My great appreciation for their work.
