Standout blend

The rimrock-topped Spring Creek canyon is always such a great background for handsome little Maiku.

Here, he gives me some attention, but most of his focus was on a young stallion with a nearby band.

What a great Maiku portrait, TJ! Good enough for the school yearbook. 😁 He is always the handsome one.

How how is the water supply for the Mustangs holding up? And are there any fires still going

Thankfully well. Yes, fires are still burning throughout the West, including in Colorado. Our sky has been wonderfully blue lately … but also devoid of clouds.

He most certainly is. πŸ™‚ He’s about the size of a big pony – and stout!

Awe. He has a white streak in his mane like my Nevada Wild Horse Management Area mustang!

Does your Nevada mustang have a corresponding white mark on his coat? Maiku is a pinto; that white slash over his withers – that makes its way into his mane is his only pinto marking. 😊 HMA = herd management area. I see it a lot where the H is thought to be for “horse,” but it’s for herd. I don’t know the Nevada herds well at all; where is he from?

Sorry yes, Herd not Horse. I was told he was gathered up on Nellis Airforce Base (Area 51). The youth adopter I purchased him from, competed in the Virtual Mustang Makeover – 2022?. I think he finished third in his division. Linus has a splash of white on his neck, hence the white streak. He is a dun pinto. I got him when he was three. This post has a picture of him: https://heccateisis.wordpress.com/2025/07/07/break-from-riding/ . Love your photos.

Oh, he’s a gorgeous guy! Looks like his mane is white at his withers, matching his coat pattern; does he also have a bit of white on the crest of his neck where that other white streak is? Mustang colors and patterns fascinate me. πŸ™‚

I believe that’s Nevada Wild Horse Range – one of three wild horse ranges in the country; Pryor Mountain (MT/WY) and Little Book Cliffs (CO) are the other two – on Nellis Air Force Base. That’s cool! You never hear about those mustangs! You probably know this, but for other readers, this is what Google AI has to say: “The Nevada Wild Horse Range is a significant area within the larger Nellis Air Force Range (NAFR) in south-central Nevada, specifically managed for wild horses. It is the first wild horse area established in the United States, created in 1962 by a cooperative agreement between the Air Force and the Nevada Bureau of Land Management. The range is located within Clark, Lincoln, and Nye counties and encompasses 1,301,637 acres of military land, according to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).”

Very cool that you have him! He looks like a total character! πŸ™‚
