Facing the light

Handsome little Maiku was watching some horses that had crossed an arroyo and were grazing their way up the hill. He and his band had just grazed their way into the light from the shade cast by the butte across the drainage. Perfectly lit. πŸ™‚

“Maiku” is a Ute greeting word. When I first found it, the accompanying text said it was pronounced “mica” or “my-kuh” so that’s how I pronounce it. I later learned, from a Ute woman, that it’s more like “mike,” with maybe a very soft “eh” at the end. I like to come up with names that are relevant to the places and/or other peoples who have called Disappointment home and/or happenings around the time of the foals’ births. Maiku is a bay-and-white pinto.
