Aspen moseys on ahead of the band. I love that green on the hills and ridges in the background. Some in the nearer background (there’s a big arroyo in the lower part/mid-ground of the pic) is greasewood and shadscale and four-wing saltbush (salt desert shrubs), but much of the green in the background is grass: grama, galleta, sand dropseed, alkali sacatone, etc. It’s a bountiful summer (thank goodness for even our sporadic monsoon rains!).

Thank goodness for the rain! It has gotten dry again, but it’s always welcome!

Aspen on the San Juans is slow to turn this year. That, I’m sure, is because of all the rain we had during monsoon season. The elk are down already and there’s something for them to eat. The cattle are coming down in intervals and I’m pretty sure they’ll be set for winter. Some farmers have had three cuttings. It’s slowly cooling down and we are regaining our freedom.
That’s great about the hay growers there, and that there’s plenty for the elk. The mustangs are juuuuuust starting to grow their winter wear. 🙂
