One light, one dark

20 04 2012

Kreacher and Duke were hanging out by the dugout when I drove by the other day. I’ve seen the boys almost every visit, but they’ve been far away, so I’ve been keeping tabs on them via binoculars. This day, they were fairly close, so I walked out to say hello.

Duke. It had gotten windy, and how handsome this wild boy looks with his long locks!

They’re very comfortable together (they’ve been together for a while now), and Duke is the leader.

Basin boys.

Aspen has been hanging out alone. These boys had been keeping a watch on him earlier. Maybe they’ll bring Aspen into the fold.

Storm has Mona!

19 04 2012

Baby distraction – that’s my excuse!

Young mister Storm does, indeed, have mistress Mona. He’s hanging out in the territory he basically claimed last year with Baylee and Tenaz – the east pocket.

The odd thing this year is that because of our mild winter, no one is back to share it with them! Grasses are coming up spread out all over the basin, and so the horses are spread out this year as well. That’s a good thing! A few ponds already are dry, but BLM plans to dig out another three with some of the Director’s Challenge money we got.

The wind in light

Oh, baby.

Houdini and Mariah, walking into the light. Oh, how gorgeous you are!

Piedra plus one

18 04 2012

Hollywood’s beautiful grey girl had her baby!

It’s a girl – again. 🙂

She’s at least a couple of days old – and feisty!

Every time she’d try to nurse, mama would take a step. Baby girl got annoyed. Love the ‘tude!

And, of course, she eventually got her way.

Then it’s nap time for baby. Attentive mama standing by.

Beautiful morning, beautiful girls!

Seven and crew

16 04 2012

A while back, I promised more pix of Seven and the horses with him, but then came the distraction of baby Mariah! And now Aspen is – or was recently – alone. I haven’t seen Mona – or Storm. Bounce and Tenaz had left the bands, too.

He doesn’t lack for handsomeness, does he? 🙂 Mr. Muscle!

He definitely has Roja (and their son Killian) back, and he chased Mona back to Aspen at least a couple of times. Roja is definitely pregnant!

Mona with Aspen.

Better light on the pretty girl.

Storm, growing up and shedding out! When I confirm his whereabouts – and Mona’s – you’ll be the first to know!

Family ties

14 04 2012

Baby Mariah with her new family.

Even almost-yearling Aurora takes a role in protecting baby.

Mamas and their daughters. Notice Gaia shedding.

When the babies are little, mamas are constantly checking them, sniffing them, reassuring them – and themselves – that all is well. Each one so precious and unique.

Light against dark

14 04 2012

Piedra and Shane, touched by early morning light. This was about a week ago, but with Shadow evidently not foaling soon, Piedra is next on the foal-watch list. She’s due around the end of the month.

Do be due

13 04 2012

Miss Shadow has been one of the first foalers of the year. She was due today, in fact!

When she first realized I was there.

Curious girl.

I don’t think the girl is having a baby today. She’s thick enough through the belly that I think she *is* pregnant. But if so, she’ll be later this year.

Handsome Mr. David. He lost her during the roundup. Storm got her. David got her back. Storm got her back. David has her back. (Storm may have Mona.)

David and Shadow

Watchful David.

Two of a kind.

World’s end

13 04 2012

It’s peaceful there, and quiet, except when the wind blows. And so beautiful, you never, ever want to leave.

Alegre and her almost-yearling filly Aurora. Taken during my visit with Grey/Traveler’s band and their newest member.

The basin’s hills and plains are covered in the faintest blush of green now. So subtle, this year’s signs of spring. After our mild winter, expected, perhaps. On a grey, windy day and with snow yesterday and snow in the forecast, part of me yearns for an explosion of spring. But the basin’s beauty is subtle, and spring, however soft, is much welcomed. And I never, ever want to leave this end of the beautiful world.

Soft light

12 04 2012

About-to-be-first-time mamas Gaia and Corona – both in Grey/Traveler’s band – are hanging out close together these days.

Little Corona’s little belly is bulging.
