So lovely! I was in Big 5 this morning, and saw a small model foal that looks very much like Mysterium. In fact, there were many more that, with a bit of touch-up, could pass for SCB Mustangs. It would be fun to make my own little “herd” diorama.
Will they chase this little guy too? He’s only a few days old right? Oh I hope he will be ok and not get seperated from his mama. This is killing me. π¦
I know you are busy. I will be anxiously awaiting any news I can find.
Mysterium was just born August 22, but she wasn’t due till at least September, so she and her family aren’t targeted. Plus Kootenai is a Sand Wash Basin mare.
Rachel is correct! But I gave her an Aug. 21 birthday – between your guess and Zacharias’. π Being from Sand Wash Basin means she (and Raven and Mona) were brought to Spring Creek Basin for their genetics, to boost the viability of our herd because it’s so small.
They have to remove some horses because there isn’t enough resources for them all. If they were left much longer, the horses would start to get skinnier and skinnier.
The mares were brought in because of that- there’s space, but not enough for enough horses to make it genetically diverse. That’s why they have to bring in outside genetics, to make it so they aren’t inbreeding, but still keep the population down. I don’t remember what the population number should be, though.
On the subject of “names” – We think all the foals of SCB are precious and should have names that are connected to their origin, their land and their heritage. We particularly enjoy seeing suggestions for names that reflect the true heritage of the wild mustang in the American West and/or some reference to the First Nations of this Continent. Think of those Native American peoples who became known as “the people of the horse” and so on… We also believe to give a name to someone is almost *sacred* and should be given with some pause and thought to the great *gift* horses/mustangs have given to the Native Americans and others of this country’s early history… To give the gift of a name is to not only honor the culture of the horse but, to honor the culture behind the giver…

The Basin’s little Pearl :*
Oh she looks bigger already! She’s so adorable!
What a great name! He is beautiful beyond words!

Oh right, whoops! Slipped up the dates there.
Thanks, both of you for the info. I remember reading that now, but I forgot. I’m glad to know that.
It seems such a contradiction….
” she (and Raven and Mona) were brought to Spring Creek Basin for their genetics, to boost the viability of our herd because itβs so small.”
And yet they are now making the herd smaller with the roundup. I don’t get their reasoning.
My thoughts are with you and the horses. I can think of nothing else.

I think that’s it, but I might be wrong.
