Bluebirds and lost boys

25 03 2010

They weren’t lost, of course. They knew where they were all along. But I didn’t know. My notes say I hadn’t seen the elusive boys since Nov. 22! I wasn’t worried … but I missed them.

Look who-la-lah I found today!

They were back toward Bones Valley … Found ’em when I went to check one of the ponds that got dug out last fall. They’re such cool cats, they acted like no time at all had passed.

Poco. He has a knack for sticking himself in the face with prickly pear spines.

Roach. It was windywindywindy today.

There is an encouraging amount of water in both dugout ponds.

Happy spring. 🙂

We had four fat, male mountain blue birds here today. No wild horses, but there are some not far away; Jicarilla, Melby and Rio Grande. It is good knowing they are out there. While advocates met in DC you were out with the real subjects. They give you and the camera such knowing looks. mar

Nice pictures TJ! Those elusive boys will never give us a break, will they? =P Don’t you think that it’s very strange when horses or groups of horses disappear for a long while? I know that they are probably just roaming on another part of the vast land, but still…. I just can’t help thinking. =) Maybe thinking is a good thing, though. Ha. Beautiful photos, beautiful boys.

Hi Jumper!!! It’s so cool you’ve made friends with TJ- you’ll see me often on this site too :]

Thanks again, TJ, you were so sweet to answer our questions on GHC! Roach looks so adorable today, and that bluebird is beautiful!

Mar – It’s great, indeed, knowing wild horses still live on the lands they’ve roamed for centuries. It keeps us going. Love seeing those whirling blue dervishes!

Roxanne – Happy to “make your week”! Seeing the boys made mine, too!

VC – Those two boys had a pretty rough year last year that started with Bones’ death in the spring. They wandered around, hooked up briefly with a couple of bands … more consistently with Hollywood’s band … then “inexplicably” went home (home for them is that back, eastern portion of the basin). I’ve hiked around that area a couple of times this winter but was never where they were when they were there! They weren’t far from the road yesterday, but I never would have seen them if I hadn’t walked back to check that pond. Lots of hidey places out there – some almost literally right under your nose! 🙂

Pam – Ditto yay!! I was so happy to see them!

Rochlia – Thank you again for inviting me to participate in the GHC interview during your March for Wild Horses month! I had so much fun with all of you! You asked great questions, and it has been awesome to “meet” ya’ll!

Marilyn sent me this website and I just bookmarked it. Beautiful site with wonderful pictures of the horses in your “neck of the woods”! I am so glad that the wild horse herds are starting to have people document and put out information on the herd to the public.
Ginger Kathrens stated on Thursday at the March for Mustangs that the BLM just hates it when we give the horses names so lets name every wild horse out there in the West! I belong to a group who keeps an eye on the Chincoteague Pony herd in Virginia. Various people keep track of the ponies, send emails, photos, and when they were in danger this past winter by bad storms called the USFW to have them moved to higher ground. Taking back our “ownership” of the wild horses works! Thanks!

Barb – How wonderful for you to be part of that group watching over those Chincoteague ponies! I hope to make it out there someday to visit them, too. I’m riding the shirttails of at least a couple other people who made me aware of the benefits of documenting our mustangs: Matt Dillon, director of the Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center (http://pryorwild.wordpress.com); and Billie Hutchings (http://wildhorsefever.spaces.live.com/). Be sure to visit their blogs, too!

Love ‘dem boys!! Glad you found them! Bet they miss Bones, but we think they’ll always stay together – it was a FAMILY after all…
