Hope and future

3 10 2025

Ladies ‘n lads, there’s a whole lot going on in the world right now.

None of you need me to tell you that.

What I do want to tell you is that there is a hard-working core group of folks (some of whom don’t even know and/or aren’t involved with each others’ work … and many working in great collaborations) who are dedicated to Colorado’s mustangs, on and off their home ranges. I can list our on-range groups easily (Friends of the Mustangs, Little Book Cliffs; Sand Wash Advocate Team and Wild Horse Warriors for Sand Wash Basin, Sand Wash Basin; Piceance Mustangs, Piceance-East Douglas), but I don’t want to try with the off-range-focused groups for fear of leaving some/any out. Believe me: They are out there, and they are dedicated.

As much as so many are divided these days, we mustang advocates are united in our love of our mustangs and goals of securing good management or good off-range lives – and sometimes both at the same time.

This post is late because I forgot to schedule one ahead of time (and/or I may have thought I’d have time to do it when I got home …), but I was just visiting a sanctuary and herd in northwestern Colorado where beautiful mustangs roam, and there are people as dedicated to protecting them and providing safety and wild futures for them as I am here for my Spring Creek Basin beauties.

The trip renewed my sense of hope that, at least in this, we have options and opportunities to continue the important work of advocating for our mustangs, wherever they might be in Colorado, with people who are united in doing the same (however differently).

That’s pretty cool.

(This golden eagle indulged our visit right along the road for many wonderful moments, and s/he seemed to be an excellent example of the sentiment of hope that goes with this post.)

Really beautiful eagle.

It’s so so good to hear of MORE people who care and support our mustangs.

I get emails from WHE – and the roundups are so devastating and brutal. Devils Garden was unconscionable – but the court cases sound like there is a possibility that maybe maybe some of these souls who were removed might have a chance to go back home.

I hope so. Chilly Pepper is doing its best for individual horses & foals but Laurie’s medical issues have to be making it hard. She keeps keeping on tho.

I guess all of us, on-range and off, just have to do the same.

We don’t always agree about the path, but we are all working toward a common goal.

I am so grateful for all of you who are on the frontlines for our precious mustangs, TJ. And that is one impressive eagle; what a great photo of him on the fence post!

S/he was much stickier than ours in Disappointment Valley. I couldn’t believe s/he waited for us to back up and then sit there and take loads of pix. Impressive, for sure! 🙂

This is beautiful — and though my world here is not mustang-world, I extend that to this world. I saw a young golden eagle hunting a few days ago. He’s got a good shot at food right now. The drought has drained a couple of ponds and the water birds are all going “WTF? I spend the winter here!” Honestly, I’m continually on the verge of tears, (and sometimes cross it) over what’s happening.

The drought is not kind to any wildlife. We have got to get a good amount of snow this winter! It’s hard to see the land in such distress. … And animals, too. We humans really need to figure out ways to help, not hurt, this planet that sustains us.

Amen. I think we know a lot more than we can get the powers to recognize. The planet will bring that lesson home to all our peril. 💔

Great info TJ. Just back from a short stay at Piceance and saw a few young ponies which is very exciting. Thank you for the list of CO mustang advocates. Any additional info that you come across would be welcome ! Saw a Golden eagle too but far more skiddish:)

Very nice that you got to see some youngsters there in Piceance. It was devastating last week to see the burn scar from the Lee Fire south of Meeker all along Highway 13. Winter will be tough on the critters that call that area home, but we all desperately need that moisture.

Agreed. Had no idea how big the fire was:( At least it was raining in Yellowstone and the Tetons, Lander too
