Raven and baby and family

18 05 2011

Some very special kids in Telluride and a mom spent Mother’s Day in Spring Creek Basin visiting the horses. She was wonderful to send me some pix after their visit and tell me about the great time she and the kids had. Every once in a while, the opportunity arises to get kids involved with THEIR mustangs, and this was just such an opportunity: I asked if the kids would like to name a foal.

Raven had her big bay colt the day or so after they visited, and they’re working now on a name for the boy. They have at least a couple in mind … we’re waiting on the final. πŸ™‚

We’re getting rain here in Southwest/western Colorado, so I’m stuck at home once again and want to get pix of the boy out, the fourth of our new foals from last week. We need the moisture BADLY … though the timing could have accommodated my “weekend” a little better!

Raven and her boy – isn’t he a big stunner?

Mama and her baby boy

Look how the dazzling girl shines!

Daddy Kreacher

“Auntie” Kootenai (who came with Raven and Mona from Sand Wash Basin; Mona’s daughter, Shane, also is Kreacher’s).

What do you think of that belly? I am, in fact, expecting a special delivery from Kootenanny this year … time will tell!

Big sister Corona in what seems to have become her signature look.

Pretty, pretty mama!

Baby, mama and Kootenai in a “thicket” of greasewood.

He’s a pretty big boy!

Givin’ the boy a schnuzzle …

Sleepy boy …

… and down for the count. πŸ™‚

Oh, little man, how handsome you are!

No exception – so loved!

So many wonderful shots! Kootenai has MORE than a “baby bump”, so I think there’ll be a new foal after a while. And Raven looks as though she could have another! I’m sure she’ll recover her “girlish figure” chasing after little ?????. Can’t wait for the name. Kids always come up with something creative.

From pix I’ve seen, the SCB horses seem refined compared to others. Not too many whiskers or feathers, and pretty/handsome heads. Must not be much, if any, Draft in the mix. And so slicked out already. Beautiful!

It’s been a gully washer here since this morning. Hope the basin got some as well. Strange Spring.

Yes, one of the “side effects” of using PZP is that when the mares foal again the babies tend to be bigger and healthier.
Beautiful baby. Love the face mark.
We are getting rain here too and as you said, it is really needed!

Billie – Thanks for confirming that! She was in fantastic condition leading up to her foaling date, and she looks awesome now! And you can’t argue with that big colt!

Linda – I agree, our horses are fairly refined. I think some of that influence traces back to “Mr. Ed,” commonly thought to be Grey/Traveler’s sire, and, of course, Grey himself has sired countless foals. Of these horses, only Kreacher is native to Spring Creek Basin (and I don’t know his background). Raven and Kootenai came from Sand Wash Basin, and Corona’s daddy is still in SWB (the fabulous Corona, aka “Fabio”!). Some very beautiful mustangs there, too!

It has been raining off and on all day – including a couple of pretty heavy snow showers! Wonderful moisture!

Your horses are such posers! Raven especially :] I’m excited for Kootenai’s foal, I hope it looks something like her-she’s beautiful!
