Yikes – how did December sneak up on me?
Every year, I do a little calendar for family, and the last few years, it has focused exclusively on Spring Creek Basin’s wild horses. I have the hardest time choosing, and I am the world’s biggest procrastinator (at least it’s not January already), which creates a perfect storm of indecisiveness when it comes to picking photos for my next calendar!
So I had an idea influenced by some other blogs I read: I’m going to narrow down my choices as much as humanly possible, and I’m going to ask you, dear readers, to help me choose the *one* for each month. To sweeten the deal and as a thank-you for your help, I’m going to then put the names of everyone who helps me choose into a hat and pull out one name, and that person will get a 2011 Spring Creek Basin Mustangs calendar of their very own.

It’s smallish – the photos are 4×6 inches – one photo per month. The calendars come from a company called Photographer’s Edge, and I customize them with my photos.
Here’s how it’s going to work:
I’m going to do a series of posts – one for each month – with a coupla-few pictures per post. I’ll give each picture a “caption.” In the comments field, let me know your vote, identifying it by the caption. Easy? I’ll spread out the posts over the next several days, and the deadline for comments/votes to be in will be Dec. 15. Then I’ll ask one of our NMA/CO board members to help me draw a name, and I’ll announce the winner Friday, Dec. 17, and I’ll post all the selected photos right after that. That ought to give me plenty of time to get it put together and in the mail. I’ll contact the winner by email for a mailing address. (To keep it simple on my end, it won’t matter how many times you vote/comment – the first time you comment will seal your entry into the hat; but I hope you’ll offer your vote for each month!) In the case of a tie, I’ll be the deciding vote.
I just realized I’m going to have to choose a cover photo, too … I’ll have a separate post on that!
All the selections for each month will have been taken in that month this year. So all the photos coming up to select for January 2011 were taken in January 2010 – make sense? I think all of the photos will have been posted here previously, but there’s always the chance they haven’t been.

These are the best calendars. Got mine done, but I wound up using horses from the other areas too. So, of course, Winona, Kestrel and Comanche are in it! Can’t wait to see your calendars. Better make lots, everyone will want to buy one!
I’m going to tentatively say yes on buying them … only because I don’t want to purchase a lot of calendars beforehand that I don’t use. Would you be OK with a purchase price that includes the cost of the calendar and the printing of the photo and a small donation to our Colorado chapter of the National Mustang Association? I don’t know what that price would be yet … If you buy a calendar, I’ll mail it to you with our latest newsletter and the new brochure we did with BLM this year. Also, I can’t guarantee by-Christmas delivery because of everything else I have going on … but for sure in January?
Billie – You are definitely NOT a procrastinator! Good for you! And I love that Winona, Kestrel and Comanche are in your calendar! I think Comanchero and “his” baby girl might be my Christmas cards … have to see what else comes up!
TJ, I’d be happy to pre-pay the cost of the calendar and mailing (plus send a donation) as soon as you come up with a price. Nothing worse than ordering a bunch of something and ending up eating the expense. January delivery is fine. Do you have to order in lots? If so, maybe we can spread the word and get you and the NMA Colorado some money!

Linda – Great! I’ll try to come up with a price shortly. The calendars aren’t too much – I think there are discounts the more you buy over certain numbers. But I think I’ll have to get the photos commercially printed (I usually do them on my own printer because I usually do just 4-5 calendars a year).
I’ve started selecting photos and drafting posts … I’m really sorry in advance, but this is why I enlisted your help! It’s going to be really hard. May is going to be nearly impossible (that’s the farthest I’ve gotten so far) – I could hardly pick photos to have all of YOU pick from!
This was just a wonderful, super, fantastic, incredible year with the horses – they’re vibrant and and beautiful and amazing … Really, I just run out of words!
I’ll be glad to help pick pictures, and will also purchase a calander. Great idea. The horses are all so cute. It will be hard to pick.

Just wanted to send my thanks to you! I have lived in Dove Creek for 5 years now and had never visited the wild horses in disappointment. I was searching for information on them and came across your site. We took our family last weekend for our very first trip to visit the horses. How exciting for all of us. We didnt get to far in before we came across a herd. Visited with them for some time then tried to go on in but the roads were to slick. I have some photos of the band we did come across and would love for you to identify them for us. The kids really liked the fact you had names for them and we would love to know who they are.

Millie – how wonderful! i wish the roads had been better for you. When I went in last week, it was cold enough that I was still driving on snow. Today, it was mostly dry except in the back (east). You might have good luck if you went back this weekend? I’m very eager to see who it was you saw … Kreacher’s maybe, or Chrome’s … maybe even Hook’s? I’ll send you an email! I’m so glad you got out there to visit!

My favorite pic is Seven for september although it was a toss up between his and the mare and foal above him ;)! Wow gorgeous pictures 🙂
