Happy birthday, Sable!

Mahogany wasn’t due last year till mid-May, around the time of the Four Corners Back Country Horsemen’s annual count – when Pinon was born the year before. So it was an amazing little surprise to find this little blaze-black beauty last year right after I found Whisper.

Look at that glossy black coat! I was pretty sure she was true black, and so she is.

Don’t you want to just run your hands all over her baby-soft, sable-black beautiful coat?

With mama Mahogany and big brother Pinon.

I adore this one … I’m starting to think Mahogany may be a bit older than I originally thought. Like all the mamas, she takes exceptionally good care of her babies.

Ahhhhh …

Happy birthday, black beauty girl!

She looks so furry in that last pic :] what a sweet face! Aren’t true black horses hard to find? Is Shadow a true black?

I don’t know how rare they are in general, but black horses are not common in our Spring Creek Basin herd: Bounce, Shadow, Sable, Raven (pinto), Spook (pinto) and Corazon (pinto) are black. We actually have fewer sorrels than blacks: Roja, Roach and Gaia … and it’s looking like Hayden may stay sorrel. I know a bunch of sorrels were removed in 2007, but I don’t know how many black horses were.

On a related note, grey (several shades) is the dominant color in the basin, followed by bay (and a few different shades of bay). We also have dun, buckskin and one palomino (Corona, who is EXTREMELY light again). The pinto, dun, buckskin and palomino colors come from introduced genes.

The last pic of Shadow was taken in the heart of winter – January. πŸ™‚ Most of the adults are actively shedding now – and a couple are almost completely shed out (Mona for sure) – but the youngsters seem to keep their fuzzy coats longer/est. When the ponies are shed out, then I know it’s really spring! πŸ™‚

I do love this horse. She is so gorgeous! That blaze really sets off her “blackness”. A true beauty is this one!

Hi!
I am the gal who was working at the Artisans of Mancos gallery when you came in……I don’t even know your name! This blog is incredible!

I am going to Arizona tomorrow to pick up a beautiful zorse. If you are in the Mancos area, give me a call and you can come out and see her. Her dad was a zebra and her mom was a quarterhorse. She loves to ride, pack, be in parades, etc. Quite an incredible being – just like you!
See you,
Patty

email me and let me know more about you!!
