Little Spook was named after the pinto stallion that introduced the pinto pattern to Spring Creek Basin. Her mother, pictured with her above, is Kiowa, who was given a reprieve when she was released with her filly Reya after the 2007 roundup. I don’t know who Spook’s sire was, but he was likely removed during the roundup.
She is one of only two native black and white pintos in the herd. Bachelor stallion Corazon, who hangs out with the pinto band, is the other. There’s one muley-bay and white pinto, and the others are dark bay and white. (Raven, introduced from Sand Wash Basin, also is black and white.)
She’s marked like a jigsaw puzzle. π

The pintos are elusive, and I don’t see them as often as I see the other horses. So I don’t have as many pix of Spook. And she sticks close to mama and sister …
So I don’t have many pix of her by herself!
Sister Reya is 3 this year, but I don’t know her birthday – presumably late April or so …
Happy second birthday, Spook, family girl!

wow love your photos. what area was those ones at? i was down there yesterday and got shots of some off 67 and some side roads but i never seen those groups.
This is Spring Creek Basin, in Disappointment Valley, southwestern Colorado. I’m not sure where you mean by 67 – is that a highway? County road? Are you visiting another herd area? It is fun to see the wild horses, isn’t it? π
aww ok getting confused i thought spring creek was someplace near sand wash basin. I went to sand wash basin yesterday. got some shots and from what i hear got in there and out of there just before people came in and rounded a bunch of them up.
Sand Wash is a wonderful place – I visited last fall. Gorgeous horses and wide-open country! I think you must have heard about the Sombrero Ranch roundup and drive of ranch horses. I know there are a lot of equine photographers in the area for that event. The last BLM roundup in Sand Wash Basin was in October 2008. I’m pretty sure they didn’t just have one.
Check out Sombrero’s website – and the video!: http://www.sombrero.com/
thats good to hear im glad it wasnt another round up.
The first website you list, A Million Horses, seems to be very pro-slaughter. That is, it is advocating the return of horse slaughter “industry” to the United States.
Does this reflect your views?
You photographs are absolutely wonderful as is the work you are doing.
Thank you for the wonderful blog!
Hmm. Good point. And no, that does not reflect my views. I found a reference on it that was helpful -unrelated to slaughter – on numbers. I didn’t look too far into the site. Thanks for the heads-up.
